In the early 20th century the American South was ravaged by pellagra, a nasty disease that produced the “four Ds” — dermatitis,    16    , dementia and death. At first, pellagra’s nature was uncertain, but by 1915 Dr. Joseph Goldberger, a Hungarian immigrant employed by the federal government,   17   conclusively shown that it was caused by nutritional deficiencies associated with poverty, and especially with a corn-based diet.
However, for decades many Southern citizens and politicians refused to accept this diagnosis, declaring either that the epidemic was a fiction created by Northerners to insult the South or    18    the nutritional theory was an attack on Southern culture. And deaths from pellagra continued to climb.                 Sound familiar? We’ve known for months what it takes to bring Covid-19 under control. Most advanced countries have gone down this route. A few countries, like New Zealand and South Korea, have largely or completely defeated the coronavirus. But the United States is exceptional, in a very bad way. The rate of new cases never declined all that much, because falling infection rates in the New York area were   19   by flat or rising infections in the South and the West. Why? A lot of the answer is that many state governments have rushed to return to business as usual even though only a handful of states   20   federal criteria for even the initial phase of reopening. Epidemiologists warned that premature reopening would lead to a new wave of infections — and they were right.

                                                      Solar Eclipses
A total solar eclipse is perhaps one of the most dramatic astronomical events we may witness during our lifetimes. For a few short minutes during a total solar eclipse, day seems to turn to night. The sky darkens. The air cools. The nighttime stars become visible. It is no wonder people travel around the world to see such a spectacular sight!
A solar eclipse only occurs when the new moon passes between Earth and the Sun and the three are in perfect alignment. Since the Moon's orbit around Earth is slightly tilted compared to Earth's orbit, this alignment doesn't happen every month. However, when perfectly aligned, the Moon covers the Sun and its shadow falls on Earth, blocking our view of the Sun. Interestingly, although the diameter of the Sun is much larger than the diameter of the Moon, from Earth, they appear to be the same size. The Moon is much closer to Earth and is located at the exact distance needed to completely block the Sun during a total eclipse.
There are three main types of solar eclipses: total, partial, and annular.
Total Solar Eclipses - During a total solar eclipse, the Sun appears to be completely blocked by the Moon. The darkest part of the Moon's shadow, called the umbra, traces a narrow path across Earth. Only those located in the umbra's path will experience a total solar eclipse. The few minutes when the Sun's light is completely blocked is called totality. Total solar eclipses only occur once every year or two. Partial Solar Eclipses - During a partial solar eclipse, part of the Sun appears to be blocked by the Moon. Partial solar eclipses occur when the larger and less dark part of the Moon's shadow, called the penumbra, falls on Earth. Partial solar eclipses happen at least a couple times a year. The penumbra shadow is larger than the umbra, so partial solar eclipses can be seen from more locations than total solar eclipses.
Annular Solar Eclipses - During annular solar eclipses the Moon is farther from Earth than during a total solar eclipse. It is too small to completely cover the Sun. A ring of sunlight shines around the Moon during an annular solar eclipse.
Caution! Never look directly at the Sun! Looking directly at the Sun can cause permanent damage to your eyes. Normal sunglasses will not protect your eyes! Consider using a simple pinhole camera to enjoy a solar eclipse safely.

AUGUST 1-14: TWO-WEEK SALES AND USE TAX EXEMPTION ON GARMENTS
The tax law has been changed to allow for another two-week exemption from North Carolina State’s 3% sales and use taxes for certain garments. However, the latest amendment differs considerably from the same type of sales exemption that took place at the beginning of the year. This exemption does NOT apply to footwear. The new two-week exemption only applies to purchases of garments. Additionally, this latest exemption is limited to purchases with a cost of less than $100 per item, whereas the previous exemption had a cost limitation of $500.
Although a suit could sell for $200, it could be broken down into $100 for the jacket and $100 for the pants, thus enabling the buyer to meet the $100 requirement. This will be the last exemption of this kind this year. The exemption applies to most clothing, assuming it is to be worn by human beings. Fabric, yarn, buttons, zippers, etch., are also covered, provided that these notions are actually part of the clothing itself. Although jewelry, watches, hats, etc., are worn on the body, they will remain taxable as under the previous exemption rules.

Why Visit Kinmen?
You can’t leave without seeing a wind lion god! Built in the past for protection from wind damage and misfortune, they’re unique to Kinmen. Dotted all around the island, you’re almost sure to run into one, but they’re especially concentrated in the northwest part (Shamei town area) where the wind is the strongest. There’s a dedicated guided bus tour (Taiwan Shuttle Bus Tour E) for them, or if you have extra time at the airport, a 3-min walk away is a park with life-size replicas of all of them!
Kinmen people are serious about honoring their ancestors, and in your travels around, you might be lucky enough to pass by a temple ceremony. With firecrackers and traditional live music, you’ll know it when you hear it!
There are various annual events sponsored by the government that highlight Kinmen’s distinctive culture—check the Events page for dates and details.
I love to get out and about, either on foot or on my scooter. There are so many museums to visit. And they’re all free! One of my favorites is the Kinmen Historical Folk Culture Museum. It offers a comprehensive insight into the fascinating social history of this beautiful island. Another gem is at TongAn Pier, Kinmen’s first port, from which early Kinmenese left to explore a wider world. But for me, there’s so much to explore right here!
