請依下文回答第 39 題至第 42 題: What makes people smart? It is a question that scientists and philosophers have thought about for centuries, prompting complex calibrations, from head measurements to brain-bending tests. Yet the drive to probe the powers—and the limits—of the human mind has been thwarted by the hard facts of life:the brain was virtually a black box, its inner secrets locked within. Now, scientists are using the latest technology to peer inside. Using machines such as the PET scanner and FMRI machines, which map the changes in the brain’s blood flow, researchers at U.C. Irvine and elsewhere are producing the first images of how gifted, and not-so-gifted, minds go about the task of thinking. In one study, Professor Richard Haier of U.C. Irvine found that brighter people have lower metabolic rate probably because their brains are more efficient. However, when bright people are given harder tasks, their brains work harder than the average person’s. Apparently, brain activity depends, to some extent, on the difficulty level of the task and the level of effort required.
【題組】40 What is the newest way for scientists nowadays to explore the human brain?
(A)Giving brain-bending tests
(B)Mapping the changes surrounding the brain
(C)Giving tasks of calibration
(D)Using machines like the PET scanner

Contrary to common opinions, megaliths are rarely crude or unplanned. If observers are careful enough, they will detect on the giant stones the traces of those supposedly refined carvings, now worn down by rainwater and frost. And even when the shape of the stone is irregular, its overall appearance shows it was selected and quarried with care. The Fairies’ Rock at Essé, the finest dolmen in Brittany, is made of enormous blocks of red shale taken from a rock bed two and a half miles away. While fairies were carrying stones in their aprons—so the story goes—one stone slipped from the aprons, and dropped from the sky to the ground; the result is this isolated dolmen.
The texture and color of a stone used in the dolmen often bespeak a good knowledge of local geology.Priest-architects would have taken the best that was available in the area. In chalky earth at Bougon, the dolmen’s pillars match one another and are made of the local rock. The covering slabs, however, are of a different texture. One is a 32-ton block of Bathonian flint from an outcropping two and a half miles away, and the other is a fossiliferous coralline massif weighing 90 tons that was excavated at a distance of several hundred yards.

【題組】21 According to the 2nd paragraph, what knowledge did a local priest always possess?

請依下文回答第 16 題至第 20 題 In the book Mostly Harmless, by Douglas Adams, a man from Earth travels to a strange planet. The people on the planet don’t have technology. At first, the man thinks he can become the people’s leader because he knows about technology. However, he soon realizes he can’t create technology by himself. As Adams writes in the book, “By himself, he couldn’t build a toaster. He could just make a sandwich, and that was it.” In 2010, a British designer named Thomas Thwaites was inspired by the story. After reading it, he decided to build an electric toaster by himself, using raw materials. To begin his “Toaster Project,” Thwaites looked at all toasters in a store. He bought the cheapest toaster because he thought that it would be the easiest to build. He took it apart to see what it was made of. Although the toaster seemed simple, it had 400 different pieces! These pieces were made from about a hundred different materials from all over the world.
