Traffic in most American cities is a problem, especially during the rush hours when many people are going to or returning from work. Consequently, there are traffic reports on the radio throughout the day, and there are many articles about traffic issues and traffic accidents in the newspaper. Traffic issues, road building, repairs, and the quality of public transportation are so important to the general public that they are often brought up during political campaigns. Expanding public transportation and encouraging car pools are two methods often discussed to improve traffic congestion. Many major cities are beginning to designate one lane of their major highways for only car pool traffic during rush hours, and special car pool parking lots are being built outside major cities. In addition, people are being encouraged to use public transportation, such as buses and underground trains whenever possible. Many cities offer special discount tickets on public transportation for commuters who use this form of transportation regularly.

Psychologists have long known that people can solve their problems at work and home by “sleeping on it.” Dr. Deirdre Barrett advises individuals to ponder questions just before falling asleep (Should I take this job? Should I marry that guy?) and then let the subconscious provide the answers. “I’ve known artists looking for inspiration who simply dream up a future show of their art and wake up with plenty of new painting ideas,” says Barrett. “More and more people are learning these techniques to control their dreams.”
Dr. Stephen LaBerge, for example, has pioneered a way of directing the sleeping mind through “lucid dreaming,” in which a sleeping person realizes he or she is dreaming while it is happening. In “lucid dreaming,” your dreams are like private movies where you are the star, director, and writer all at once. Lucid dreamers can use the experience for a variety of purposes: problem solving, developing creative ideas, and healing. A person may use lucid dreaming for everything from talking to his/her long-dead father to gorging on sweets. Moreover, a weak swimmer in the waking life may dream of diving to the bottom of the dream ocean without worrying about breathing (or his/her swimming skills). Most importantly, lucid dreaming is free and available to everybody.

請依下文回答第 40 題至第 43 題 I have referred in passing to the difficult tasks assumed by the Greek Archaeological Service, and I hope that it will not seem too presumptuous if I further enlarge on them. The unselective preservation of Greece’s material heritage, which is a cause so estimable in principle that almost nobody would speak in public against it, has brought about another, less obvious, crisis. The historically conscious visitors to Greece today are rightly impressed by the steady increase in the number of local museums and in the quality of exhibition. What they may not appreciate—and I think that this is true even of classicists and other “professionals” who are not archaeologists—is that what is actually displayed is merely the beautiful tip of an unsightly iceberg. Almost every museum in Greece is compelled to conceal in its storerooms a mass, growing year by year at an alarming pace, of materials unsuited to exhibition; these artifacts are often undocumented and sometimes destined to remain so. If the Archaeological Service were rewarded, either in salaries or in manpower, on a scale that bears some faint relation to the colossal contribution that its activities make to the nation’s tourist industry, then one could look ahead to a possible reduction of the pressure. If we cannot change the current policy, the only prospect is that it will rapidly increase: even to keep pace with the rate of growth in the “submerged nine-tenths” of its holdings, the service would need an increase in manpower. Much of the material has to be stored in improvised accommodation, which proves to be difficult of access for researches; meanwhile, its keepers are distracted by the ever more persistent demands of emergency excavation.
【題組】40 According to the passage, which characteristic of the current policy causes the crisis of the preservation of the Greek material heritage?
(A)Eclectic
(B)Estimable
(C)Private
(D)Unselective
