Buying overpriced indulgences may feel good in the short term, but you pay the price later. Or at least that’s the conventional wisdom. But a study by a couple of business-school professors says splurging now makes you happier later. Even more surprising: not splurging now gives you pangs of regret later. One study in the Harvard Business Review polled college students and alumni on the subject of spring breaks. Regret about not having spent more money or traveling during breaks increased with time, whereas regret about not having worked, studied, or saved money during breaks decreased with time. The authors write: “We saw a similar pattern in a study of how businesspeople perceived past choices between work and pleasure. Over time, those who had indulged felt less and less guilty about their choices, whereas those who had been dutiful experienced a growing sense of having missed out on the pleasures of life.” The authors also did a study of mall shoppers, asking about their regret about buying an expensive item of clothing. Those who anticipated short-term regret bought less-expensive items, while those who anticipated long-term regret splurged. Luxury-goods makers, of course, will eat this up. I can see the slogan now: “Luxury: It’s Good for Life.” Well, whether luxury is good for your finances is another matter. Wealth Report readers, what do you think? Do the long-term benefits of indulgence outweigh the short-term risks of regret?

Hong Kong has lost its sky. The city is frequently _____6_____ in a noxious smog, and many days the only place you can see a clear shot of the famously picturesque skyline is in ads for luxury apartments. Urban esthetics _____7_____ , the damage to Hong Kong residents’ lungs may be worse. “The only safe conclusion is that air pollution is having a very serious _____8_____ effect on the health of people of all ages,” says Dr. Anthony Hedley, chairman of the Department of Community Medicine at the University of Hong Kong. The only good news is that air pollution has become so severe that Hong Kongers are finally ready to force their leaders to act. And the city’s business community is pushing for solutions. The answers are out there: the government’s Council for Sustainable Development in early May 2006 released a number of smart anti-pollution _____9_____ , such as restricting vehicle use on high-pollution days, and asking electricity producers to use only clean coal or low-polluting natural gas by 2010. In the meantime, many experts doubt whether Hong Kong’s bureaucracy has the imagination or the will to implement those ideas. Christine Loh, CEO of the local think tank Civic Exchange, says that they just do not have the kind of political leadership now.

We've all had nights when we lie awake in bed, unable to quiet our racing thoughts. There are plenty of reasons why sleep may be evading you—maybe you had caffeine too late in the afternoon, 21 , or you've been staring at your laptop screen for hours and haven't given yourself time to relax before bed. These are things to keep in mind for improving future nights of sleep. But what if you've done everything "right" leading up to bedtime, and you still find yourself 22 and turning?
It's very common for people to report being physically tired, but not being able to shut their mind off, especially if they're very worried about something. Worries keep people awake, and they don't have to be 23 worries. It could also be something positive you're planning, like a trip or a big event with a lot of things you have to remember. Spending time during the day or earlier in the evening to sit and 24 those concerns may help, but if it's too late for that, grab a notebook and try physically writing them down in a list for the next day. A recent study found that writing out a to-do list of future tasks helped people fall asleep nine minutes faster than people who wrote about tasks they'd already 25 that day. Researchers think the act of getting them down on paper helps clear the mind and stop rumination, at least temporarily.

請依下文回答第 46 題至第 50 題: Wherever you go in France, the country’s artistic heritage is very much in evidence. France does have her share of ugly urban sprawl and unlovely out-of-town hypermarkets, but these are eclipsed by her wealth of beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings which, together with striking new architecture and works of art, are part of the fabric of everyday life. France has had an important role throughout the history of western art which began with the cave painters of the Dordogne, long before their land became a nation. From the Renaissance onwards French kings invited the finest European painters to decorate their palaces, and Paris became the center of nearly all important artistic developments, whether the artists concerned were French or not. It was only in the nineteenth century that French painters formed a distinctively French movement that was far more influential than the Flemish, German and Italian schools of previous centuries. The impressionists and their successors radically altered the direction of European art, attracting even more foreign artists to Paris. Since the seventeenth century, when the Academies of painting and sculpture, and architecture were founded, architecture and the visual arts have been a central concern of the French state. Today, the Ministry of Culture is housed in the elegant seventeenth-century Palais-Royal, alongside two of the nation’s highest institutions, the Conseil Constitutionnel and the Conseil d’Etat, exemplifying the belief of Catherine Trautmann, the culture minister from 1997 to 2000, that “culture is at the heart of our democratic system.” This sentiment echoes the aims of her predecessors who include de Gaulle’s post-war minister Andre Malraux and Mitterrand’s innovative and daring minister, Jack Lang, both of whom wanted to enrich the lives of ordinary citizens.
