第 42 題至第 46 題為題組  In earlier time periods, the absence of dramatic transition to adult life allowed a more intensive interaction among different age groups within the family and the community, thus providing a greater sense of continuity and interdependence among people at various stages of life. But, as greater differentiation in stages of life began to develop, social and economic functions became more closely related to age, and the ages of family members became more streamlined, a greater segregation between age groups emerged.  The major changes that have led to the isolation of older people in society today were rooted not so much in changes in family structure or residential arrangements, as has generally been argued, as in the transformation and redefinition of family functions and values. Under the impact of industrialization, the family surrendered many of the functions previously concentrated within the household to other social institutions. The retreat and growing privatism of the modern middle-class family led to the drawing of sharper boundaries between family and community and intensified the segregation of different age groups within the family, leading to the elimination of older people from visible family roles. The transfer of social-welfare functions, one concentrated in the family, to institutions in the larger society further contributed to the segregation of older people. The care of dependent, sick, delinquent, and elderly members of the community, which had been considered part of the family’s obligation in the pre-industrial period, was gradually transferred to specialized institution such as asylums and reformatories. The family ceased to be the only available source of support for its dependent members, and the community ceased to rely on the family as the major agency of welfare and social control.

(A) The residential arrangements
(B) The rise of middle-class family
(C) The transfer of family obligation to social institution

第 39 題至第 42 題為篇章結構,各題請依文意,從四個選項中選出最合適者,各題答案內容不重複 For many of us, while we are reading something, we may be listening to music or the radio at the same time. For people who work online, they may be used to e-mailing or instant-messaging or checking stocks at the same time. Since the 1990s, we have accepted multitasking without question. 39 While multitasking may seem to be saving time, psychologists and neuroscientists are finding that it can put us under a great deal of stress and actually make us less efficient. Basically, multitasking is shifting focus from one task to another in rapid succession. 40 It gives the illusion that we are simultaneously tasking, but we are really not. In plain language, it is like playing tennis with three balls. Of course, it depends what we are doing. For some people, listening to music while working actually makes them more creative because they are using different cognitive functions. 41 We may all be familiar with the so-called “e-mail voice,” when someone we are talking to on the phone suddenly sounds, well, disengaged. 42 They point out that it is a big illusion that people think they can shift back and forth between tasks.

What is the challenge of the university? When it is best understood, the challenge of the university reveals itself more as an opportunity than a competition between adversaries. It is an opportunity for students to earn an education by challenging themselves to meet the standards set by the university in a range of academic programs. Successfully meeting this demand moves students closer to their goals. Thus, the more open to the challenge, the more likely students are to succeed.
How can students know whether they are open or not? Here are some useful indicators of openness. Students should demonstrate the ability to give critical and rational consideration to ideas and values that differ from their own, even when those ideas and values push them to the edges of their comfort zone. Besides, students should examine their own core beliefs and values, which are often culture-based. A reasonable tolerance for uncertainty is also necessary. That is, they do not need to have an answer for everything all the time. Last but not least, students should have the courage to risk and accept being wrong and at the same time to learn from the mistakes.
