IV. 閱讀測驗:
Wasting food is morally wrong across cultures. After all, about 800 million people worldwide suffer from hunger. But according to a report from the United Nations, people waste 2.9 trillion pounds of food a year around the world. In developing nations much food is lost after the harvest for lack of storage facilities, good roads, and refrigeration. In comparison, developed nations waste more food when retailers order, serve, or display too much and when consumers ignore leftovers in the fridge or get rid of foods before they have expired.
Wasting food also negatively affects our environment. If we produce food that no one eats, we also waste the water, fertilizer, seeds, fuel, and land needed to grow it. For example, a year’s global production of uneaten food uses as much water as the annual flow of the Volga River, Europe’s largest river. In the U.S., retailers and consumers are estimated to discard 133 billion pounds of food each year. These examples just show how many natural resources have been wasted, and how our environment might be damaged with the air or river pollution.
Reducing food waste has become an important issue that needs to be dealt with. Some U.S. schools are setting up sharing tables, letting students serve themselves portions they know they will eat, and giving them more time for lunch. Many businesses, such as grocery stores and restaurants, have planned to order food wisely and move excess food to charities. It is also important to examine conditions farther up the supply chain, where supermarket standards and ordering methods lead to massive food waste.

【題組】41. Which of the following is NOT the reason why the developing nations lose much food?
(A) Their roads are in bad condition.
(B) The refrigerators are not enough.
(C) They have a problem of air pollution.
(D) They lack facilities to store their food.

Time magazine has honored a Taiwanese vegetable vendor Chen Shu-chu as one of the 100 most influential people of 2010. Chen was also selected by Forbes magazine as one of the 48 heroes of philanthropy ( 善行 ) from Asia. Out of her modest income, she has donated NT$10 million to charity over the years, including a children’s fund, construction of a library at a school, and construction of the local orphanage, where she also gives financial support to three children.
Everyday around 3 a.m., Chen shows up at the wholesale market to pick fresh produce. At 4 a.m., her stall opens for business, and customers are already waiting. She came from a poor family and was forced to drop out of school at the age of 13 to support her six brothers and sisters following the death of her mother. Her mother died in labor and her brother died of illness because her family could not afford medical care. She took over her mother’s vegetable stand and has been selling vegetables at Central Market in Taitung since 1963.
She makes a small profit of five to ten NT dollars on each sale. The nickels and dimes she earns are the basis for her charitable giving. Many poor students and families whom she has never met have had their lives changed by her generosity. Chen Shu-chu is merely a common grocery vendor. She is not famous. The 61-year-old once told a newspaper that money is not useful unless it is given to those in need. Her story encourages many people that even though they may not be rich, their small donations may come as a great help to some less fortunate people.

【題組】49.According to the passage, which of the following is true?
(A) Time magazine selected Chen as one of the 48 heroes from Asia.
(B) Her stall opens for business at 3 a.m., when there are lots of customers waiting.
(C) She has changed many poor people’s lives by her generosity.
(D) Forbes magazine honored Chen as one of the 100 most influential people of 2010.

A young man was recently murdered in an apartment in Taipei. The police found no clues except for one fingerprint on the wall. Usually, finding the owner of a fingerprint would take several days or even months because there are millions of fingerprints in the files. In this case, however, the police found the murderer in just a few hours because they had a powerful helper — a computer. The computer compared the fingerprint on the wall with all the fingerprints in the files and told the police whom the fingerprint belonged to. Computers can store large amounts of information. In a few seconds, they can give us the information stored in them. In one second, computers can do millions of calculations. Through the computer network, we can send information to a faraway place in a moment. Computers are used in many other situations today. At home, we use small, simple computers to control the washing machine or the microwave oven. At the supermarket, computers read the labels on products and work out the bills. In the library, a computer can tell you, in a second, if a book is there. Many schools use computers to teach students. People may even use computers to make friends on the BBS. Many people believe that computers will become as smart as or even smarter than human beings and that they will do everything for us. If this happens, what will you do to pass the time? Don’t worry. You’ll have a lot of computer games.
【題組】42. Why could the computer help the police find the murderer so fast?
(A) Because it could read the labels on products.
(B) Because it helped the police find the person to whom the fingerprint belonged.
(C) Because it had a lot of games.
(D) Because it could calculate very quickly the number of fingerprints stored in the files.

Music is a powerful thing. When played properly, some music can have positive effects on learning and attitude. One way that music can make learning easier is by teaching people abstract reasoning and learning strategies. When learning music, people visualize the task in their head, and therefore exercise the same abstract skills that engineers, chess players, and high-level mathematicians use. Moreover, instruction in music skills and appreciation provides a wealth of learning strategies that help to develop children’s analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating skills. Another important aspect that music can have on learning for people of all ages is attitude. The highly repetitive structure of music helps children learn to trust themselves and enhance their self-confidence and sense of accomplishment. Thus, their attitude toward learning is dramatically increased. In addition to increasing positive attitude, listening to pleasant music in the background may ease the strain of an activity. Notice that when people listen to music in the background, it is very important that they listen to the music they are familiar and comfortable with. So in order for music to help us think, learn, and work, we need to know what kind of music to listen to.
【題組】41. The passage mainly discusses _______________.
(A) how music helps when people work and learn
(B) the importance of music to children and engineers
(C) the different structures of music
(D) how people learn to listen to music

Nature is full of examples of cycles. The seasons come and go in a cycle of spring, summer, autumn, and winter. The days move in cycles of day and night. And all living things live, grow, and die in cycles. For example, a sapling grows tall and strong. Then, one spring, the tree blossoms. These flowers later turn into fruit or other types of seeds. When these seeds fall, they land on the ground. The seeds can then grow. If the seeds get enough sunlight and rain, they will become young trees. As the trees blossom, the cycle repeats itself. Rain also occurs in cycles. Water evaporates from the oceans and rises into the sky. This means that the ocean water is warmed by the sun and some of it rises into the air. When enough water has gathered together, big rain clouds form. The clouds will release or drop the water. The rain falls on land and ocean alike. When the rain falls on land, the ground soaks up some of it. If a lot of rain falls, the runoff flows into streams, rivers, and lakes. This water, in turn, flows into the oceans. When some of this water evaporates into the air, the cycle repeats itself.
