Monthly mood swings are not just women’s business: the latest research shows that the boys are also prone to the monthly blues. A study by psychologists from England’s University of Derby suggests that men may experience cyclical symptoms similar to, or _____37_____ , those suffered by pre-menstrual women. Symptoms of this “periodic male tension” or PMT _____38_____ pain, loss of concentration, behavioral changes, physical reactions, negative feelings and loss of arousal. The research team asked 100 men and women about symptoms usually related to the menstrual cycle. They were stunned _____39_____ the men reported they suffered from similar symptoms more severely than the women. Previous studies suggest the male symptoms could be caused by internal biorhythms: the theory is that we all experience cyclical changes in our moods but, _____40_____ , women also menstruate cyclically. Another hypothesis is that men have a lower pain threshold than women and are making a fuss about nothing.

Traffic in most American cities is a problem, especially during the rush hours when many people are going to or returning from work. Consequently, there are traffic reports on the radio throughout the day, and there are many articles about traffic issues and traffic accidents in the newspaper. Traffic issues, road building, repairs, and the quality of public transportation are so important to the general public that they are often brought up during political campaigns. Expanding public transportation and encouraging car pools are two methods often discussed to improve traffic congestion. Many major cities are beginning to designate one lane of their major highways for only car pool traffic during rush hours, and special car pool parking lots are being built outside major cities. In addition, people are being encouraged to use public transportation, such as buses and underground trains whenever possible. Many cities offer special discount tickets on public transportation for commuters who use this form of transportation regularly.

請依下文回答第 41 題至第 45 題 Does your older brother think he’s cleverer than you? Well, he’s probably right. According to new research due to be published this week in the journal Intelligence, the oldest children in families are likely to have the highest IQs, and the youngest the lowest. The research is based on more than 1,000 children whose IQ was tested through childhood and adolescence up to the age of 18. The Dutch study shows a birth-order effect on intelligence in each of the tests. Overall, the IQ of the first-born child was higher than the second-born, which, in turn, was greater than that of children who had two or more older siblings. This is only the latest research to suggest that the order of birth can have a fundamental effect on diverse factors, ranging from the risk of cancer, asthma and eczema, to weight and even premature death. It can also affect personality, achievement, and career, with first-borns being more academically successful and more likely to win Nobel prizes. However, eldest children are less likely to be radical and pioneering. Charles Darwin, for example, was the fifth child of six. Exactly why there should be such differences is not clear, and there are a number of theories, with many homing in on environmental influences on the child. The so-called dilution theory, for example, suggests that as family resources, both emotional and physical, as well as economic, are finite, it follows that as more children come along, the levels of parental attention and stimulation will drop.
