I tell my students that addressing people by “sir” or “ma’am” comes in handy in their interaction with others. Case in point: I was on the phone recently with the phone company discussing the inaccuracies of my bill. The lady I spoke to was not helpful and seemed annoyed. Then, in the midst of the conversation, I threw in a “yes ma’am,” and her entire attitude changed. She became far more helpful and easy to deal with, and she ended up cutting my bill in half, which was more than I had even asked for.
Some of my students in Harlem were interviewed for a chance to attend a high-rated junior high school. The school only had thirty openings for the following year, and twelve of my students were among the numerous kids across the city who applied for the spots. I practiced what the interview would be like with my students, and one main thing I stressed was, “Make sure you say ‘yes, ma’am’ or ‘no, sir’ no matter what!” Weeks after the interviews, I was delighted to hear that all twelve of my students had been accepted. When I talked with the admissions director at the school, the main comment he made over and over was how polite my students were in their interviews. It seems like just such a simple thing to do, but it gets results.

請依下文回答第 41 題至第 45 題: From December 2013 to February 2014, the tremendous success of Korean TV drama, My Love from the Star, has helped its production company, SBS, make a great profit. This drama basically tells how an alien, who has lived on earth for 400 years, falls in love with a successful actress during modern days. Apart from having a high viewing rating in South Korea, it has also become a big hit in other Asian countries such as China, where it was streamed billions of times during the time the drama was broadcasted. Many of the products such as clothes, shoes, lipsticks, and sunglasses worn by the leading actress in the show have also created a high demand for the fashion industry. Even the food industry benefited from the success of the show, as a snack of chicken with beer and instant noodles consumed by the main characters in the show have become extremely popular among fans. Sightseeing tours to the sites in Korea shot in the drama have also been made for fans. Although the plot of My Love from the Star may seem unbelievable to some people, its great success lies in the fact that the production company has invested a huge amount of money in shooting each episode, thus enabling the whole drama to receive high approval both from the critics and audiences. Some critics have, in particular, praised the show as being creative in terms of its themes and uses of special effects. 請依下文回答第 36 題至第 40 題
The idea of parallel universes, worlds that exist side by side along with our own, used to be viewed with suspicion by scientists as being the realm of cranks and at best, mystics. Any scientists who dared to work on parallel universes were often subject to ridicule.
However, the tide has turned dramatically today and the issue of parallel universes has come to fascinate scientists well beyond mere speculation. Physicists and astronomers around the world are now wondering what parallel universes may look like and how they were born. It has been postulated that parallel universes occupy the same space as our own in some ghostly manner.
Like our own universe, a parallel universe is an intersection of time and space and contains matter, stars, galaxies, and living things. In other words, parallel universes are very similar to our own. There may be human beings who are duplicates of ourselves. Furthermore, they are connected to us multidimensionally through mechanisms explainable only by the theory of quantum physics. Normally, parallel universes do not interact with each other. However, some scientists believe that at times the so-called wormholes may open up, making it possible to communicate and travel between them.
It is very likely that our universe is not alone at all. Instead, it is one of many possible parallel universes. Still, some scientists smugly refuse to admit that parallel universes or dimensions can exist next to ours, just beyond our grasp.

【題組】 39 Where is a parallel universe most likely to be found according to this passage?
(A) A system where no wormhole exists.
(B) The same space as our own universe.
(C) A plane in which galaxies can be found.
(D) The birthplace of physicists and astronomers.
