Questions 28-32 No step in life is more important than the choice of a vocation. The wise selection of the business, profession, trade, or occupation to which one’s life is to be devoted and the development of full efficiency in the chosen field are matters of the deepest moment to young men and to the public. These vital problems should be solved in a careful, scientific way, with due regard to each person’s aptitudes, abilities, ambitions, resources, and limitations and the relations of these elements to the conditions of success in different industries. If a boy takes up a line of work to which he is adapted, he will achieve greater success than if he drifts into an industry for which he is not fitted. An occupation out of harmony with the worker’s aptitudes and capacities means inefficiency, unenthusiastic and perhaps distasteful labor, and low pay, while an occupation in harmony with the nature of the man means enthusiasm, love of work, and high economic values—superior product, efficient service, and good pay. If a young man chooses his vocation so that his best abilities and enthusiasms will be united with his daily work, he has laid the foundations of success and happiness. But if his best abilities and enthusiasms are separated from his daily work or do not find in it fair scope and opportunity for exercise and development, if his occupation is merely a means of making a living, and the work he loves to do is sidetracked into the evening hours or pushed out of his life altogether, he will be only a fraction of the man he ought to be. Efficiency and success are largely dependent on adaptation.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Consensus Development Program was established in 1977 and is designed to assess health technology. The program organizes major conferences that produce consensus statements and technology assessment statements on controversial issues in medicine important to health care providers, patients, and the general public. The following statement is from the NIH Consensus Development Statement on Acupuncture on November 3-5, 1997.
Acupuncture as a therapeutic intervention is widely practiced in the United States. There have been many studies of its potential usefulness. However, many of these studies provide equivocal results because of design, sample size, and other factors. The issue is further complicated by inherent difficulties in the use of appropriate controls, such as placebo and sham acupuncture groups.
However, promising results have emerged, for example, efficacy of acupuncture in adult post-operative and chemotherapy nausea and vomiting and in post-operative dental pain. There are other situations such as addition, stroke rehabilitation, headache, menstrual cramps, tennis elbow, fibromyalgia, myofascial pain, osteoarthritis, low back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and asthma where acupuncture may be useful as an adjunct treatment or an acceptable alternative or be included in a comprehensive management program.
Findings from basic research have begun to elucidate the mechanisms of action of acupuncture, including the release of opioids and other peptides in the central nervous system and the periphery and changes in neuroendocrine function. Although much needs to be accomplished, the emergence of plausible mechanisms for the therapeutic effects of acupuncture is encouraging.
The introduction of acupuncture into the choice of treatment modalities that are readily available to the public is in its early stages. Issues of training, licensure, and reimbursement remain to be clarified. There is sufficient evidence, however, of acupuncture's value to expand its use into conventional medicine and to encourage further studies of its physiology and clinical value. This statement is representative of the opinions of current standard medical practice.

Passage 1
The kimono is a traditional Japanese dress. In modern days, it is worn only sparingly or during special 16 such as weddings, tea ceremonies, formal traditional events and funerals. A kimono of a particular style and color is to be worn depending on the occasion and the person's age and marital status. Men's kimonos usually have more subdued colors and are made typically from matte fabrics. Partly for this reason, it is the women's kimonos 17 generate more interest because their beautiful designs make them art pieces as much as they are garments. The women's kimonos are traditionally made of silk, 18 these days they are also made of polyester. Decoration techniques include embroidery, yuzen painting and dyeing. The price of a kimono can range from around 10,000 yen for a simple set 19 of cheap fabric to millions of yen for a luxurious silk outfit with intricate embroidery or yuzen designs. The outfit is accompanied by traditional footwear and a small handbag for women. When buying kimonos, take into account that maintenance is an issue unless you are not planning on ever wearing them. Silk kimonos are difficult to clean and washing without the proper methods might 20 damaging the garment. Kimonos of polyester material are easier to clean, but you should always check with the merchant the appropriate ways of maintaining them.

III.Reading Comprehension: Choose the best answer for each question.
 Reading 1
Our brains function in complex and puzzling ways. Case studies have shown that some people can calculate the day of the week for any given date in 40,000 years, but they cannot add two plus two. Others can perform complex classical piano pieces after hearing them once, but they cannot read or write. People who have these special abilities but cannot look after themselves suffer from savant syndrome. Scientists have only recently begun to explain this condition, which has interested neurologists since Dr. J. Langdon Down first described it in 1887. He called these people idiot savants (savant means wise person). We now know that the condition occurs as a result of some kind of brain malfunction. Dr. Benjamin Rush, an American doctor, offered one of the first descriptions of a person who could calculate quickly in 1789. His patient, Thomas Fuller, was brought to Virginia as a slave in 1724. It took Thomas only 90 seconds to figure out that a man who has lived 70 years, 17 days, and 12 hours has lived 210,500,800 seconds. He even included the leap years in his calculation. Despite this ability, he died in 1790 without ever learning to read or write. Another idiot savant slave became famous as a pianist in the 1860s. Even though he had a vocabulary of only 100 words, Blind Tom played 5,000 musical pieces beautifully.

IV. Discourse Structure: Choose the best answer from the box below for each blank in the passage. Questions 26-30
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a disorder of the brain and behavior. Here is one way to think about what having OCD is like: Imagine that your mind got stuck on a certain thought or image. Then this thought or image got replayed in your mind over and over again. You don’t want these thoughts but it feels like an avalanche. Along with the thoughts come intense feelings of anxiety. Anxiety is your brain’s warning system.  26  On the one hand, you might recognize that the fear doesn’t make sense; yet it still feels very real, intense, and true. When scientists compare pictures of the brains of groups of people with OCD, they can see that some areas of the brain are different from the brains of people who don’t have OCD.
27  However, research suggests that differences in the brain and genes of those affected may play a role. OCD involves problems in communication between the front part of the brain and deeper structures.  28  Pictures of the brain at work also show that in some people, the brain circuits involved in OCD become more normal with either serotonin medicines or cognitive behavior therapy.
Some research shows that OCD does run in families.  29  No one really knows what other factors might be involved. Perhaps an illness or even ordinary life stresses may induce the activity of genes associated with the symptoms of OCD. Some experts think that OCD that begins in childhood may be different from the OCD that begins in adults.   30

【題組】26
(A) These brain structures use a chemical messenger called serotonin.
(B) Unfortunately we still do not know the exact cause or causes of OCD.
(C) It is an emotion that tells you to respond, react, protect yourself, and do something.
(D) Other studies note that genes seem to be only partly responsible for causing the disorder.
(E) Studies have shown that genes play a larger role when OCD starts in childhood compared to when it starts in adulthood.

Reading 1 One of the most breathtaking natural occurrences is the northern lights or aurora borealis. When it occurs.in the southern hemisphere, it is called the southern lights. The northern lights can be viewed by many more people, especially those who live close to the North Pole in Europe and Canada. This phenomenon, which is dazzling display of green, red and blue lights that shoot across the sky,is caused by atoms that emit light. These atoms are in the earth’s upper atmosphere. They get hit by subatomic particles that are emitted by the sun and the collisions cause light emissions. These particles travel though space and hit the earths magnetic field, where most of them are repelled. However, a few get through into the atmosphere, and cause the northern and southern lights. No one who has seen these lights forgets them, for they are bright, fast moving, unpredictable and thrilling. It's like watching a giant hand wave a paintbrush across the sky, erase its work, and swiftly paint again.

Reading 2 Moths and butterflies are common insect that live in your garden. They don’t have skeletons inside their bodies as we have. Their ‘skeletons' are on the outside-they don't have backbones, knee-bones or toe-bones,but instead have a soft body on the inside with a type of hard protective shell. Butterflies can laste things through their feet. They often stomp up and down on a leaf, testing and tasting it to see if it is a good pIace to lay their eggs. Some butterflies lay their eggs all together, and others lay theirs in scattered bunches which keeps the eggs safer from enemies that might enjoy snacking on them. Butterflies and moths have a long hollow tube, just like a straw, that they use to suck up their food (flower nectar) The tube is called a proboscis and it can be curled away neatly when it is not being used. The longest proboscis belongs to Darwin’s hawkmoth. It is about 35 cm long and the moth ne^ds it to reach the nectar at the bottom of the deep flowers it feeds on. Butterflies and moths have been fluttering about the skies for 140 million years. Unfortunately, modem times have seen many beautiful species become extinct. They have died out because forests have been cut and their homes there have been lost.
【題組】26. Why do some butterflies lay their eggs in scattered bunches?

(A) They want to clearly mark where their eggs are.

(B) They try to make it easier to take care of their eggs.

(C) They want to protect eggs from enemies that might eat them.

(D) They try to make eggs beyond the reach of other butterflies.

Reading3 The most popular event in the world is probably the World Cup, and it is certainly in first place among sports competitions. This soccer toumament features the top 32 teams in the world, and is held once every four years. The World Cup is uniquebecause soccer is unique. It is played everywhere. And this is the sport that inflames ethnic tension and sparks national pride more than any other docs. Soccer is an outlet for the feelings, tensions and desires of groups, whether they be tribal, regional or national. The battles beteen teams from different parts of one country-the northwest and south of England, for example-can be just as bitter and divisive as those between rival countries. However, an entire nation will put aside its intenal differences and cheer for its national team. All the energy produced by the public, passionate fans and casual viewers alike, causes the World Cup to be a singularly exciting event. Amazingly,715.1 million people watched the championship match in the last tournament in 2006, even though most of them didn’t come from the two countries playing in that final, Italy and France.

Depression is a mental illness in which a person experiences deep sadness and diminished interest in nearly all activities. People also use the term “depression” to describe a low mood, loneliness or blues that everyone feels from time to time. In contrast to normal sadness, severe depression, also called “major depression”, can dramatically impair a person’s ability to function in social situations and at work. People with major depression often have feelings of worthlessness, helplessness and hopelessness, accompanied by low self-esteem and inappropriate guilt as well as thoughts of committing suicide. Although it may appear anytime from childhood to old age, depression usually begins during a person’s 20s or 30s. The illness may come on slowly and then deepen gradually over months or years. On the other hand, it may erupt suddenly in a few weeks or days. A person who develops severe depression may appear extremely anxious, frightened and unbalanced. Insomnia is common among the depressed people. Appetite often decreases, resulting in weight loss. Other symptoms of depression include poor concentration and memory. The illness affects all people, regardless of sex, race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic standing. However, women are two or three times more likely than men to suffer from depression. Experts disagree on the reason for this difference. Some cite differences in hormones, and others point to the stress caused by the society’s expectations of women.

IV. Reading Comprehension: Please choose the BEST answer for each question according to the contents. Passage A
The kidneys are located in the posterior part of the abdomen. The right kidney sits just below the liver, while the left kidney is under the diaphragm, next to the spleen. On the vertebral level, they are approximately positioned from T12 to L3. In a normal human adult, the kidneys are about 12 centimeters long and five centimeters thick, and weigh 150 grams. They filter the blood and secrete water and nitrogenous waste (urea, creatinine, and so forth) in the form of urine. The medical field that studies the functions and diseases of the kidneys is called nephrology.
The kidneys are composed of nephrons. Each nephron consists of a glomerulus, Bowman’s capsule, and renal tubule. There are more than a million nephrons within a healthy adult kidney. The vital function of the nephron is to remove waste from blood plasma. It also helps to maintain a normal fluid balance in the body by reabsorbing water and some electrolytes back into the blood.
Urine is formed by a process of filtration and reabsorption in the nephron. Blood enters the nephron via the arteriole. As it passes through the glomerulus, water is filtered through the glomerular membrane and collected in the Bowman’s capsule. The filtrate then passes through the proximal tubule, loop of Henle, distal tubule, and collecting tubule. Other substances, such as uric acid and hydrogen ions, are also added to the urine.

【題組】34. How many nephrons can possibly exist within a normal adult kidney?

Passage B
Whether they’re swooping in to deliver packages or spotting victims in disaster zones, swarms of flying robots could have a range of important applications in the future, a new study found. The robots can switch from driving to flying without colliding with each other and could offer benefits beyond the traditional flying-car concepts of sci-fi lore, the study said.
Robots with similar versatility could fly over impediments on the ground or drive under overhead obstacles. But currently, robots that are good at one mode of transportation are usually bad at others, study lead author Brandon Araki, a roboticist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, and his colleagues said in their new study.
The researchers previously developed a robot named the “flying monkey” that could run and fly, as well as grasp items. However, the researchers had to program the paths the flying monkey would take; in other words, it could not find safe routes by itself.
Now, these scientists have developed flying cars that can both fly and drive through a simulated city-like setting that has parking spots, landing pads and no-fly zones. Moreover, these drones can move autonomously without colliding with each other, the researchers said. “Our vehicles can find their own safe paths,” Araki told Live Science.
The researchers took eight four-rotor “quadcopter” drones and put two small motors with wheels on the bottom of each drone, to make them capable of driving. In simulations, the robots could fly for about 295 feet (90 meters) or drive for 826 feet (252 meters) before their batteries ran out.
The roboticists developed algorithms that ensured the robots did not collide with one another. In tests in a miniature town made using everyday materials such as pieces of fabric for roads and cardboard boxes for buildings, all drones successfully navigated from a starting point to an ending point on collision-free paths. Adding the driving apparatus to each drone added weight and so slightly reduced battery life, decreasing the maximum distances the drones could fly by about 14 percent, the researchers said. Still, the scientists noted that driving remained more efficient than flying, offsetting the relatively small loss in efficiency in flying due to the added weight.
“The most important implication of our research is that vehicles that combine flying and driving have the potential to be both much more efficient and much more useful than vehicles that can only drive or only fly,” Araki said.
The scientists cautioned that fleets of automated flying taxis are likely not coming anytime soon. “Our current system of drones certainly isn’t robust enough to actually carry people right now,” Araki said. Still, these experiments with quadcopters help explore “various ideas related to flying cars,” he said.
The scientists detailed their findings on June 1 at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ International Conference on Robotics and Automation in Singapore.

IV. Reading Comprehension: Please choose the BEST answer for each question.
Reading A
Blind people can “see” things by using other parts of their bodies. This fact may help us to understand our feelings about color. If blind people can sense color differences, then perhaps we, too, are affected by color unconsciously.
Manufacturers have discovered by experience that sugar sells badly in green wrappings, that blue foods are considered unpleasant, and that cosmetics should never be packaged in brown. These discoveries have grown into a branch of color psychology.
Color psychology now finds application in everything from fashion to decoration. Some of our preferences are clearly psychological. Dark blue is the color of the night sky and therefore associated with calm, while yellow is a day color with associations of energy and incentive. For a primitive man, activity during the day meant hunting and attacking, while he soon saw red as the color of blood and anger and the heat that came with effort. And green is associated with passive defense and self-protection.
Experiments have shown that colors, partly because of their psychological associations, also have a direct psychological effect. People exposed to bright red show an increase in breath, in heartbeat and in blood pressure; red is exciting. Similar exposure to pure blue has exactly the opposite effect; it is a calming color. Because of its exciting meaning, red is chosen as the signal for danger, but closer analysis shows that a vivid yellow can produce a more basic state of alarm. So fire engines and ambulances in some advanced communities are now rushing around in bright yellow colors.

【題組】32. If people are exposed to bright red, which of the following things does NOT happen?
(A) They breathe faster.
(B) They feel satisfied.
(C) Their blood pressure rises.

IV. Reading Comprehension: Choose the BEST answer for each question or statement below based on what is stated or implied in each passage.
CAN ART COME FROM AN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE?
Artificial Intelligence, or AI, seems to be getting smarter every day. Already AI computer
programs can land airplanes, analyze X-rays, and make money on the stock markets. This is true, some people say, but an AI will never be able to produce a great painting or write a great novel. Or will it? In fact, AIs are already producing creative works of music, literature, and art. Moreover, some artists are optimistic about AI: they see it as a possible partner and not as a competitor.
A recent experiment shows how far AI has come. In the experiment, music lovers attended a concert in which some parts of the music were composed by a famous classical musician—Johann Sebastian Bach—while others were written by a computer. The listeners had to guess which parts were written by Bach and which were created by the AI. The results were surprising. On the whole, listeners could not distinguish between the two: they often guessed that Bach’s music was written by the AI!
AI-generated writing, however, still has problems. In general, AIs can write short texts fairly well, but they struggle to produce longer works. Some AI writing programs are capable of producing a paragraph or two of fiction that look like the work of a human author. They can even copy a writer’s style well. However, if current AI programs write a chapter or a whole novel, the story quickly becomes a confusing mess. AI poetry is better, partly because poems are often short. And partly, it’s because poems do not need to follow a clear, logical order because they usually do not tell a story.

AI art is the same. In 2016, Microsoft directed an AI program to create a painting in the style of a master artist—Rembrandt van Rijn. Art critics hated the work and argued that it lacked the usual qualities of good art. However, a second experiment suggests something different. A major art fair in Europe showed AI paintings next to works by human artists. People who went to the fair did not know this. The result was that many people had positive reactions to the AI art. In fact, they often preferred it to human paintings.
So, the issue may be with AI artists rather than AI art itself. People complain that computers make art by analyzing styles and following a program. This is not how humans make art, they say. But some artists disagree. They will tell you that making art is not just about expressing emotions. Instead, making art is a process with many rules, and this helps the artists express their feelings and be creative. Advanced computer programs are good at following rules, so there is no reason why they should not be able to make great art.
In fact, some artists are already using AI programs in their work. Sougwen Chung is a good example. For Chung, an AI is not just a tool like a paintbrush. Instead, she thinks it is more like a collaborator, a person or, in this case, a machine that you work with. Chung built a robot arm that can copy the movement of her hands, so when she paints, the robot paints, too. The robot is also an AI that can make predictions or suggestions about what she will do next. As a consequence of this, Chung’s art is going in new directions that she had not imagined. It also makes her think about what it means to be an artist and whether art can only come from humans.
Will artificial intelligence ever be good enough to make art without a human partner? It is a difficult question to answer, but AI is already doing things that were unimaginable only a few years ago. Perhaps the more important question is whether humans will be able to enjoy AI art knowing who—or what—created it

【題組】36. What does the author say about the experiment in the second paragraph?
(A) Bach‘s music was chosen because he used technology to compose it.
(B) The concert was short because the AI had not written much music.
(C) Some listeners could not identify the music written by the AI.
(D) Most listeners detested the music concert and resisted attending it.

Reading II
Micro-, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) contribute to the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at all levels. In Ethiopia, MSMEs can play crucial roles in accelerating progress towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in line with national needs and circumstances as spelled out in the Industrial Development Road Map (2013-2025) and the "Ethiopia 2030: The Pathway to Prosperity Ten Years Perspective Development Plan (2021-2030)". Despite their noted contributions to SDGs, MSMEs, especially women and youth-owned enterprises in Ethiopia, have been hit the hardest by the negative socioeconomic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Returning the economy to its high growth trajectory requires focusing on sectors with high productivity and job creation potentials, including strengthening MSME digitization and entrepreneurship skills to elevate MSME growth and resilience towards external shocks and access to investment and market opportunities.
This workshop is organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Industry, Ethiopia. The workshop aims to strengthen the capacities of policymakers at national and sub-national levels tasked with supporting the formalization, growth, and resilience of MSMEs. It is also designed to elevate digitization and entrepreneurship skills among MSME entrepreneurs, especially women and youth entrepreneurs, to access investment and market opportunities. The workshop will train 50 participants, including national policymakers, sub-national MSME supporting officers, and MSME entrepreneurs, who will be tasked by the government to train more MSME supporting officers and entrepreneurs across the country.

【題組】45. How many participants will the workshop train, and who are they?
(A) 100 MSME entrepreneurs only
(B) 25 policymakers and 25 entrepreneurs
(C) 50 participants, including policymakers, MSME supporting officers, and entrepreneurs
(D) 50 foreign investors
