Several years ago, when I was teaching my Love Class, we decided to attempt an assignment. We agreed to approach those people in our lives whom we valued and loved and express verbally that we “truly loved and appreciated them.” We found that what appeared on the surface to be a simple, natural thing was rather more difficult than what we had imagined. Most of the students were lovingly tongue-tied. They felt ill at ease, even embarrassed by expressing their love. Several never completed the assignment. When we discussed and shared our experiences we agreed that it was strange indeed that so many found it threatening to communicate love. Though we have learned that unexpressed love is the greatest cause of our sorrow and regrets, we usually wait until people have died to honor them publicly and to express our love for them.

AP classes are college-level courses taken during high school that will provide students the opportunity to earn credit or advanced standing at most colleges and universities. According to The College Board, AP classes help students:

■ Gain the edge in college preparation

■ Stand out in the college admissions process

■ Broaden your intellectual horizons

For more information on how to register and the benefits of scheduling AP courses, talk to your high school counselor, an AP instructor or go to http://www.CollegeBoard.com.

If your high school doesn’t have all of these classes, colleges and universities will consider this fact. Also, many colleges and universities have special admissions procedures for students who have high academic potential but need help to reach that potential because of educational or other disadvantages.

The story of the woman who married the beast was written down by a French lady named Madame Villeneuve in the 18th century. She borrowed the unusual idea of the animal bridegroom from folktales and made it into an interesting novel to read to her rich adult friends in Paris.     The United States doesn’t have one police force. Instead, there are different police agencies around the country. At the head of each police department is the Chief. The police force includes police officers and detectives. Police officers wear uniforms, and they respond to calls for help, direct traffic, investigate a burglary, etc. They often patrol a specific area and work with a partner. Detectives are plainclothes investigators who gather facts about specific cases. An officer or detective can be promoted to corporal, sergeant, lieutenant, or captain.
Citizens who are at least 20 years old can enter the police force but there are specific requirements. They must pass certain written and physical examinations.
