第 41 題至第 45 題為題組
For decades, childhood obesity rates have been on the rise. Now some U.S. cities are seeing progress in their fight against fat. New York City showed a 5.5% drop in the number of overweight children from 2007 to 2011. Philadelphia showed a 4.7% drop, and Los Angeles a 3% drop. Declining childhood obesity rates have also been reported in parts of Mississippi, the state with the highest obesity rate in the nation.
In 2011, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) began a project to combat childhood obesity. The project’s goal is to find ways to make healthy changes in a community’s schools, food stores, parks and other places. For example, Philadelphia works with an organization called the Food Trust to connect schools with local farms and bring fresh vegetables to cafeterias. New York City has required chain restaurants to post calorie information on their menus. Mississippi created a program called “Fruits & Veggies: More Matters” to teach kids how to add healthy foods to their daily diets. These examples send a clear message: Any community that makes these kinds of changes over a few years will see their children get healthier.
Now schools nationwide are doing their part. Fried food has disappeared from many cafeteria menus. Whole-wheat bread has replaced white bread. Drinks like water and low-fat milk have replaced sugary beverages, including fruit punch, sports drinks and soda. Many schools have banned junk food and require healthier snack options in vending machines.

(A)Philadelphia.

Tourism today has become rather specialized. In addition to the general tours, which only allow the traveler to quickly visit one or two heritage sites and do a little shopping on the side, innovative travel agencies offer a number of itineraries for people with special interests. For modern-day religious pilgrims, trips are arranged to Jerusalem and Mecca. For people who are interested in nature, ocean liners retrace the voyages taken by the naturalist Charles Darwin. Nature lovers can also take ecological tours that teach how to distinguish the plant and insect life in preserved wetlands. One of the newer types of tourism is called dark tourism, which includes tours to cemeteries and prisons. The traveler can visit the tombs of famous people at a cemetery in Paris or visit prisons where well-known political prisoners or hardened criminals were imprisoned. For people who take such specialized tours, learning something is more important than just being able to say, “I’ve been there.”

We often talk about time. “What time is it?” “I don’t have much time.” “Is it time to go yet?” “Hurry up! Don’t waste time.” The list could go on and on. But what is time? No one can say exactly what it is. It is one of the greatest mysteries of our lives. Though we don’t know exactly what time is, our ability to measure it is very important. We measure time by the second, minute, hour, day, week, month, year, and century. Time enables us to organize our lives and put things in some order. Breakfast comes before lunch. The reading class is after the writing class. Children can’t play until school is over. Time makes our way of life possible. People in different countries look at time differently. In some countries, it is very important to be on time and organize everything by exact time. In other countries people are more relaxed about time. It doesn’t matter if someone is late. But no matter how we look at time, we live in it, we live with it, and we live by it.
