A Western-style conversation between two people is like a game of tennis. If I introduce a topic, a conversational ball, I expect you to hit it back. If you agree with me, I don’t expect you simply to agree and do nothing more. I expect you to add something - a reason for agreeing, another example, or an elaboration to carry the idea further. But I don’t expect you always to agree. I am just as happy if you question me, or challenge me, or completely disagree with me. Whether you agree or disagree, your response will return the ball to me. And then it is my turn again. I don’t serve a new ball from my original starting line. I hit your ball back again from where it has bounced. I carry your idea further, or answer your questions or objections or challenge or question you. And so the ball goes back and forth, with each of us doing our best to give it a new twist, an original spin, or a powerful smash. And the more vigorous the action, the more interesting and exciting the game. Of course, if one of us gets angry, it spoils the conversation, just as it spoils a tennis game. But getting excited is not at all the same as getting angry. After all, we are not trying to hit each other. We are trying to hit the ball. So long as we attack only each other’s opinions, and do not attack each other personally, we don’t expect anyone to get hurt. A good conversation is supposed to be interesting and exciting.
【題組】20. How can we make sure the interaction is successful?
(A) Nobody gets hurt.
(B) Nobody listens to each other.
(C) Nobody hits the ball.
(D) Nobody gets excited.

 三、克漏字測驗【請依照段落上下文意,選出最適當的答案】 第一篇: When it comes to communication, speaking is not the only way to express how we feel. We always use a lot of non-verbal ways to show our 66 other than just using words. Facial expression is one of the ways to reveal how we feel. For instance, when someone is speaking to us, we may wear a smile to show that we agree to 67 he or she has to say. If we don’t understand someone we’re talking to, 68 ,we may frown or scrunch up our nose and forehead, which is a typical expression of confusion. Sometimes we even use body language to help us 69 express our emotions. When we see someone cross arms, he or she may be impatient. Or when we see someone nodding their heads or bowing while listening to a conversation, the gesture may signify their agreement with another person’s opinions. So, next time you have trouble 70 with someone in spoken languages, maybe you can try different ways to make it easier for you two to understand each other.

四、閱讀測驗【請依照段落上下文意,選出最適當的答案】
 第一篇:
While online gaming has become a favorite pastime of millions of people, researchers are investigating how gaming can improve work performance. Studies in the medical field show that surgeons who play video games using a joystick improve their hand-eye coordination, resulting in 37 percent fewer errors during real-life surgery. Other interactive software allows doctors to perform simulated surgery on avatars, providing practice time before operating on actual patients.
In the workplace, companies have developed performance games that run behind-the-scenes on employee’s computers. The games award points for tasks such as being on time for work, attending meetings, and finishing segments of projects. This reward-based type of gaming triggers the release of dopamine in the brain, raising performance levels and production. Other companies have discovered that linking video games with audio instructions raises retention levels of employees. Skills are then acquired more quickly.
IBM has placed Innov8, a business game, at over 1,000 universities. Students participate in real-time business models that provide immediate feedback on the decisions they make. This interactive education tool enhances book learning and lectures by allowing students to apply learned material. Decision-making skills are improved, as students learn by trial and error, and strengthen analytical skills.

請依下文回答第 26 題至第 30 題: More than half of India’s population lives in villages. Gandhi had said, “the real India lives in villages.” Rustic simplicity and natural beauty is emblematic of Indian culture and heritage. Lives of most people in villages mostly depend on agriculture. Some people earn their living from animal husbandry and agro-based cottage industries. Most of the villagers are farmers. They are hardworking, unassuming and generous. When farmers plough their fields in the morning sun, the chirping of birds that accompanies the movement of the oxen seems to hum a melody of hard work. Farmers are innocent by nature unlike some of their urban counterparts who lose their inner goodness in the cut-throat world of materialism in cities. Life in urban India is marked by wide-ranging disparity. There are residents who have unlimited means of enjoyment but some people are so poor that they have to live in slums. Economic inequality, pollution and garbage are the bane of urban existence. People also have to face lack of adequate water supply. Yet people want to live in cities because they get facilities for good education, healthcare, transport and so many modes of comforts and entertainment. There are also good opportunities for employment in cities unlike villages where very few people are gainfully employed. City life is a boon in many ways, but on the other hand it is also a curse. Every year the population of cities is growing by leaps and bounds, increasing pressure on their infrastructure and reducing life to a dehumanised rat race. Thus, life in villages and in cities presents two contrasting pictures. There are positive as well as negative aspects to the both and it is up to the individuals to make the most of it irrespective of the rural or urban setting that one lives in.
