This year's honey harvest is shaping up to be the worst in 70 years. Farmers say that due to a mild winter and an invasion of stink bugs, there ___25___ so few flowers this spring that bees are producing only ___26___ of last year's harvest. The shortage is so severe that it's forced the cancellation of Taiwan's largest honey-tasting event. A hive full of bees usually means a sweet treat is ___27___. Not this year. Honey production has been so low this season that Taiwan's biggest honey tasting event has been canceled. “I've ___28___ bees for 30 or 40 years. This year is the first time we haven't had the competition, and it's due to the bad harvest,” said a bee farmer. According to Council of Agriculture (COA), 2017 had held the record for Taiwan's worst honey harvest, with production at just over 6,000 metric tons. 2019 is shaping up to be much worse, with the annual harvest on track to reach only 1,000 metric tons. Warm temperatures this winter have disrupted the flowering cycle of lychee and longan plants, leaving bees ___29___ to find nectar. A second blow from an invasion of pests has pushed up honey prices to a record high. For the first time, the COA will pay farmers to feed their bees sugar water. ___30___ will be given for the sugar that's fed to the bees. It's a short-term solution, and it may not bring honey prices down for long

IV Reading Comprehension: Choose the best answer to each question. The French are turning their noses up at wine and rejecting their croissant in favor of breakfast cereal, the English are turning from tea to mineral water and the Spanish are turning to pizza at an alarming rate. In short we are beginning to see the evolution of the Euro consumer. That seems to be the message from research conducted by Europanel, an association of research companies across 23 countries which monitor buying patterns using consumer panels. Social and demographic factors and the marketing strategies of multinational food and drink companies are combining to make the lifestyles of different European nations more alike. The main demographic factors leading to this increasing uniformity across the continent are falling birth rates and easier divorce, according to one member of Europanel. He said, “The result is smaller households, which rely more on things such as microwaves and convenience foods, whatever the nationality.” It is noted that once a major manufacturer has won a dominant share in a mature market, it will look abroad for pastures new. Breakfast cereals are one such product. With growth possibilities in the mature British market slowing, manufacturers crossed the Channel. As a result, cereal sales in France grew by 18% in a year. Similarly, tomato ketchup sales have boomed in such unlikely places as Spain and France, with growth rates of 28% and 18%, respectively. How far the process will go is anybody’s guess. Increased choice is all very well, but the prospect of every kitchen in Europe serving up milk-sodden cereal in the morning and microwaved pizza in the evening is surely a depressing sight.

Could you imagine if a person were to grab your little toes, curl them under your foot, and bind your feet tightly with long strips of cloth? This practice was called foot binding. There are a number of suggestions concerning the origins of foot binding, but generally, it originated from the time of Emperor Li Yu. He was a ruler of the Southern Tang. Emperor Li Yu asked his concubine to bind her feet in white silk, which restricted normal growth and gave her feet a pronounced arch.
Foot binding was carried out on young girls from the age of five to eight. The purpose of this long and tormenting process was to make their feet as small as possible, no longer than 4 inches. The smaller the feet, the more attractive they were. Foot binding started with the royal court and then spread throughout China at that time. It became a required procedure for all royal females, and then to girls of wealthy families. These women inevitably became confined to their home and were dependent on personal servants for their every need. What may have started out as a fashion for small feet quickly became a symbol of social status and a distinct mark of elegance. In other words, bound feet were necessary to protect the honor of a family.
While we may feel great sympathy for these upper-class women, the situation for women of lower classes, who were expected to continue with heavy labor at home as well as in the fields, must have been far worse. By the 21st century, only a few elderly women remained with bound feet. As this practice spread throughout the general population in China, it lasted for nearly a thousand years. It is estimated that nearly a billion women endured the suffering foot binding has inflicted.

In cities all across the world, we go about our daily routines, feeling confident that our lives are orderly and predictable. But at any moment, that confidence can be shattered, as nature demonstrates that it still has the upper hand. When we least expect it, or when we’re least prepared, disasters can strike. Every day, the Earth is shaken by hundreds of small earthquakes. Most go unnoticed. They usually occur along the boundaries of the thin plates that cover the earth like an eggshell. Driven by the heat deep within the Earth's core, the plates grind against each other along lines, called faults. When the plates find their motion blocked, stress builds up. Finally the fault gives way. The released energy races through the Earth in the form of seismic waves. However, if we didn’t have earthquakes, the Earth would be a cold, dead place. If it wasn’t for this great flow of heat, there would be no continents, no oceans, and no atmospheres. The Earth would be as dead, dry, and cold as the Moon.
