With the coming of September, I recall the day when I first met Alan. It was a rainy day. He seemed very handsome, but I didn’t love him because of that. I was moved by the tenderness in his blue eyes. As there was almost nothing in our room, it was difficult to call it “home.” Although we were very poor, we believed that we were the happiest couple in the world. In fact, I felt great happiness even when I served him a cup of tea. We often sat watching the stars without a word. His smile gave me the comfortable feeling of being loved. One rainy day he suddenly disappeared. He left me a letter which began, “I don’t want to make you unhappy, my dear….”I didn’t weep over the letter because I knew Alan would be in my heart forever. Even now I cannot abandon the thought that Alan will come back to me one day and gently whisper, “Look, my darling Miranda. Look how beautiful the stars are shining tonight!” Love in September left me with a lasting memory.… Yes, a lasting memory!

請依下文回答第 39 題至第 43 題:
The Viking age lasted from AD 790 to 1100. The Vikings were mainly from Norway, Denmark, and Sweden, and were the best shipbuilders and seamen of their time. They were able to travel long distances in their longships and attack towns on the coasts of Britain and Ireland. They reached Greenland, Iceland, and even America. The Vikings’ boats were long, narrow, light, and flexible. They made them out of oak wood. The typical length of a longship was about 20 meters. The hulls of the ships were shallow so that they could dock on beaches and sail in shallow water. A longship had a large, square, woolen sail, which the Vikings covered in horse fat to make it waterproof. The main power for the longship was from the oars, which were all along the ship. There were usually a crew of about 60 men who rowed the boat. The sailors usually placed their shields along the side of the boat for protection. They also carved the fronts of their ships into the shape of a dragon’s head in order to scare the enemies.

請依下文回答第 46 題至第 50 題:
Stop motion involves physically manipulating objects, making them appear to move on their own. The objects are moved in tediously small increments, and each tiny change in their position is photographed. When the series of pictures is played in a continuous sequence, the objects appear to move of their own free will. Because clay is a material that is particularly malleable, it is often used in films that utilize stop motion photography.
The stop motion technique was first put to use in a film called The Humpty Dumpty Circus in 1898. Filmmakers used acrobat and animal toys to become pioneers in this new branch of the movie industry. In the 20th century, animators brought stop motion to the masses when the original King Kong film hit theaters in 1933. Decades later, Disney experimented with stop motion techniques character, Mickey Mouse, in 1978. Then, in 1993, The Nightmare Before Christmas, produced by the delightfully dark Tim Burton, became the first widely released stop motion feature film.
Today, thanks to the Internet, entertaining stop motion films are always just a click away. One of the best the Web has to offer is T-Shirt War, which was made by Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal. In the film, the two men use alternating images on their T-Shirts to push each other’s buttons. In all, it took 222 shirts to make the short video.
Stop motion techniques have also infiltrated music videos, and one of the most impressive is Oren Lavie’s “Her Morning Elegance.” It consists of 3,225 still photographs of actors on a bed, which were shot by a single overhead camera. It took four weeks of meticulous planning to map out the computer animated storyboard for the video before a single frame was shot.
In Taiwan, a stop motion animation video caused an online sensation. “Deadline”, a class project by Bang-yao Liu, a student at Savannah College of Art and Design, innovatively used Post-it notes. Bang-yao planned out the changing positions of over 6,000 Post-it notes for three months before beginning his four-day shoot. The moving notes tell the story of a young man dealing with a deadline as monsters, thunderstorms, and a submarine move across the wall in front of his desk. The works of Bang-yao and many other creative filmmakers show that there are no limits to this amazing method of movie making.

【題組】47 When was stop motion animation first introduced to the market?
(A) When King Kong was released in 1933.
(B) When Disney began to use it during the 1970s.
(C) When The Humpty Dumpty Circus was created in 1898.
(D) When Tim Burton made The Nightmare Before Christmas.

請依下文回答第 46 題至第 50 題: The student market in the UK is estimated to be worth £13 billion of spending power in a year. It is a market no company should ignore. Marketers are desperate to get students’ attention before they turn into high-earning graduates. But students are hard to reach and cynical. How can brands target them? Youth market trends analyst Sean Pillot de Chenecey advises companies who hope to market to students. He says there is no single strategy. Students organize their life on their mobile phones, respect brands that are ethical, but worry more about how they are going to pay off their debt than world peace. To get students’ attention, marketers must offer them something that adds to their lives. It isn’t enough to simply sponsor a music tour: they have to make the event happen. For example, Carling (a beer manufacturer) introduced live music at train station. Offering students help with their education and careers is an effective marketing method. The Guardian newspaper runs careers fairs and offers discounts on its products, such as Guardian Student, a 32-page newspaper. Red Bull, a successful energy drinks brand, uses what it calls “energy teams” on university campuses. The company recruits teams of students and gives them a Red Bull car, which has a fridge. The students offer samples and give information about the product benefits. They do this on campus at sporting events and at times of the year when students might need an energy boost. “It’s extremely important that it is a student doing this and not a company sales rep,” says the company’s consumer manager who runs the scheme. “You need to have an approach that doesn’t look like a sales pitch.” Having an insider on campus can help marketers understand student life. Youth marketing agency, Virgin D3, has a database of students who act as “field staff”. They ask them for help when planning an event at their university. Perhaps, by getting ideas from the students themselves, companies can find ways to reach this difficult market.
【題組】48 Why does the author mention the newspaper The Guardian as an example in the passage?
(A) To illustrate a marketing strategy.
(B) To explain why student consumers are difficult to reach.
(C) To give marketers details of student life.
(D) To introduce a youth marketing agency.

請依下文回答第 41 題至第 45 題:
In a city where eating well is an obsession, a statement by a senior official published in a national newspaper caused a public outcry. Vallop Suwandee, who chairs an advisory board to the governor of Bangkok, was quoted as saying that street vendors would be removed from all 50 districts of the city. It seemed that one of the most popular and distinctive aspects of Bangkok life was to be wiped out, days after CNN had voted Bangkok the best place in the world for street food, and just two months before the city government was planning to hold a street-food festival.
Mr. Vallop now says he was misquoted: “Let me be clear, on behalf of the city of Bangkok. Street food will continue to be part of Bangkok life, on the condition that there will not be obstructions for pedestrians, and that the vendors observe sanitary rules in the interest of public health. We will allow them to be in certain areas, under strict conditions.”
This is not the first time the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority (BMA), which is responsible for running the city, has tried to impose order and standards on the hundreds of thousands of food vendors operating on the streets. Right after the BMA was first established in 1972, it launched a similar campaign to force the vendors to operate in designated markets instead.
Variations of that campaign were revived every few years but implementation has always been weak because the BMA recognised the vital role street vending played in providing a source of income in difficult economic times. Most of the time it has quietly chosen not to push too hard.
This time may be different. The number of officially approved locations for street food vendors has been cut dramatically, from a peak of 726 four years ago to 243 by the end of last year. Tens of thousands of vendors have been forced to move already, leaving many downtown areas like Siam Square, Asok and Silom with few or no street-food stalls now visible during the day and night.
The most recent area to be cleared is the increasingly wealthy neighbourhood of Thonglor. A small side street, or soi, which for many years had been famous for its street food, is no more, although city officials say the vendors were offered alternative locations in smaller sois further away.

【題組】42 How does the public react to the gradual removal of street food vendors?
(A)They are profoundly shocked.
(B)They are genuinely pleased.
(C)They utterly agreed.
(D)They strongly opposed.

請依下文回答第 31 題至第 35 題 Nowadays, in public or private places, we tend to scroll mindlessly through our social media feeds when we have a few spare minutes (or for some, hours). And as we probably know intuitively, and as the research is confirming, it is not the best habit when it comes to our collective psychology. The American Academy of Pediatrics has warned about the potential for negative effects of social media in young kids and teens, including cyber-bullying and “Facebook depression.” But the same risks may be true for adults, across generations. A review study suggests “Facebook Addiction Disorder” because addiction criteria, such as neglect of personal life, mental preoccupation, escapism, mood modifying experiences, tolerance and concealing the addictive behavior, appear to be present in some people who use social networks excessively. A study also shows when people stop using the Internet, they also undergo small but measurable physiological effects. Rather than enhancing well-being, as frequent interactions with supportive offline social networks powerfully do, the current findings demonstrate that interacting with Facebook may predict the opposite result for young adults—it may undermine it. In fact, another study found that social media use is linked to greater feelings of social isolation, mentally and physically. Facebook is also a jealousy generator. We fall into the trap of comparing ourselves to others as we scroll through our feeds, and make judgments about how we measure up. One study looked at how we make comparisons to others posts, in “upward” or “downward” directions—that is, feeling that we are either worse or better off than our friends. It turned out that both types of comparisons made people feel worse, which is surprising, since in real life, only upward comparisons (feeling another person has it better than you) makes people feel bad. But in the social network world, it seems that any kind of comparison is linked to depressive symptoms. All of this is not to say that there is no benefit to social media—obviously it keeps us connected across great distances, and helps us find people we had lost touch with years ago. But getting on social networks when you have some time to kill, or, worse, need an emotional lift, is very likely a bad idea. If you are feeling brave, try taking a little break, and see how it goes. And if you are going to keep “using,” then at least try to use in moderation.
【題組】31 What is the main idea of this passage?
(A) Aware of social networks’ disadvantages, people should use them moderately.
(B) Social networks are good things that keep people connected across distances.
(C) Comparing ourselves with others is not healthy and may bring frustration.
(D) People nowadays spend too much time scrolling social media feeds.
