As a college student, you are expected to attend class and speak up when the instructor asks a question. This is true for questions about the course material and for questions about your opinions and personal experience. Most instructors encourage their students to speak up and share their opinions, even when they disagree with something. Class participation is significant! When a college professor asks a question, he or she expects an answer almost immediately. If there is no response in three or four seconds, the professor thinks the students do not know the answer. In addition, a professor sometimes asks the students to do group discussions. He or she gives the students instructions, or rules to help control the behavior of the group, yet discussions often seem unorganized because two or three people speak at the same time, they interrupt each other, and sometimes they appear impolite. This is OK (except of the impoliteness); it is a natural part of classroom discussions. It would be nice if everyone in the group let one person speak and listened politely until that person finished, but that rarely happens in a typical class.
【題組】49. In group discussions, what behavior do professors consider acceptable?
(A)Interruption
(B) Quietness
(C) Rudeness
(D) Talking on the cell phone

四、閱讀測驗(請在下列各題中選出最適當的答案)
Insects are often thought of as a nuisance to human beings and merely pests for crops and animals. Yet this is far from the truth. In fact, eating insects has been practiced throughout history and many people around the world eat insects out of choice.
The practice of eating insects is known as entomophagy. Many animals, such as spiders, lizards and birds, are entomophagous, as are many insects. People throughout the world have been eating insects as a regular part of their diets for millennia. The earliest citing of entomophagy can be found in biblical literature; nevertheless, eating insects was, and still is, taboo in many westernized societies. The unconventional nature of entomophagy has meant that farming insects for food and feed has largely been absent from the great agricultural innovations in livestock farming that emerged in past centuries – with a few exceptions, such as bees, silkworms and scale insects. Insects have also failed to feature on the agendas of agricultural research and development agencies worldwide. Until recently, references to insects for food and feed have been largely anecdotal. It is therefore unsurprising that insects are still lacking from the diets of many rich nations and that their sale for human consumption remains part of a niche food sector of novelty snacks.
Nevertheless, insect consumption is not a new concept in many parts of the world. From ants to beetle larvae – eaten by tribes in Africa and Australia as part of their subsistence diets – to the popular, crispy-fried locusts and beetles enjoyed in Thailand, it is estimated that insect-eating is practiced regularly by at least 2 billion people worldwide. More than 1,900 insect species have been documented in literature as edible, most of them in tropical countries. The most commonly eaten insect groups are beetles, caterpillars, bees, wasps, and ants.
Insects deliver a host of ecological services that are fundamental to the survival of humankind. They provide food and contribute to livelihoods. In the time when it’s more and more difficult to meet the food and nutrition needs, the practices of gathering insects for food and income definitely worth consideration.

【題組】18. Why are the tribes in Africa and Australia mentioned in the passage?
(A) Because they have noted down what they eat.
(B) Because they do not belong to the rich nations.
(C) Because insects have been food for their animals.
(D) Because insects have been among their daily diet.

With the first games ever documented in 776 BC, the Olympic Games have its roots almost three millennia ago in ancient Greece. These ancient contests, which took place in Olympia every four years, drew competitors from a number of Greek city-states and eventually the Roman Empire. The games went on until 393 AD, when Theodosius I, the Christian Roman Emperor, outlawed them due to their promotion of worshipping false Gods. The ancient Olympics, which had competitions that lasted anywhere from one to five days, included sports including throwing, running, and jumping. Interestingly, competition was restricted to men.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) was founded in 1894, marking the beginning of the contemporary Olympic era. Greece hosted the inaugural modern Games in Athens in 1896, which saw 241 athletes from 14 countries competing in 43 events. Although there was initial support for holding the Games in Athens every four years, the IOC opted for a rotating host city model. Consequently, the 1900 Games were held in Paris, marking the first inclusion of female athletes.
The Winter Olympic Games made their debut in 1924, showcasing sports like ice hockey and skating. Currently, the Summer Olympic Games include participation from over 200 countries and feature around 300 events across seventeen days. Despite their widespread popularity, the Games have encountered several hurdles. They were not conducted in 1916, 1940, and 1944 due to global conflicts. Moreover, issues such as using banned substances to improve performance among athletes and the considerable expenses associated with hosting— illustrated by the $50 billion expenditure on the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi—underscore ongoing worries. However, the Olympic Games continue to be a celebrated and highly anticipated global event.

【題組】49. When did the modern Olympics begin?

A recent study conducted at a university in the United States showed that laughing helps blood vessels work more efficiently in the same way that exercise does. Doctors don’t suggest that people stop exercising, but instead encourage everyone to try laughing for fifteen minutes a day. The scientists still don’t know why laughing is so healthy, however. Is it because beneficial chemicals are released from your brain when you laugh? Or is it because laughing exercises your abdominal muscles and lungs and increases the amount of oxygen in your blood? Another benefit of laughing is that it boosts the immune system by increasing the body’s ability to fight off colds and the flu, so people who laugh more often get sick less often. Laughing can also lower blood pressure and can reduce stress hormones. Laughter causes the release of the body’s natural painkillers, so people with headaches and other pain feel better after laughing. In another study, nurses told jokes to some patients after medical treatment. The patients who were told jokes reported less pain than those who were not told jokes. Most hospitals have laughter departments these days. For sick children, some hospitals have clown doctors. These are not real doctors, but are actors dressed as clowns with white faces, bright red noses, col orful costumes, and very big shoes. They have funny names and sometimes sing songs or do magic tricks. It’s frightening for children to be sick in hospital because they are away from their home and family, and often they don’t understand their illness. Clown doctors help them to laugh and feel happier while they receive their treatment. Adult patients love them, too!
【題組】 76. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a benefit brought by laughing?
(A) Lowering blood pressure.
(B) Improving the body’s ability to fight colds and the flu.
(C) Reducing the risk of getting lung cancer.
(D) Reducing hormones that cause stress.

第二篇: Are organically grown foods the best food choices? The advantages claimed for such foods over conventionally grown and marketed food products are now being debated. Advocates of organic foods -- a term whose meaning varies greatly -- frequently proclaim that such products are safer and more nutritious than others. The growing interest of consumers in the safety and nutritional quality of the typical North American diet is a welcome development. However, much of this interest has been sparked by sweeping claims that the food supply is unsafe or inadequate in meeting nutritional needs. Although most of these claims are not supported by scientific evidence, the preponderance of written material advancing such claims makes it difficult for the general public to separate fact from fiction. As a result, claims that eating a diet consisting entirely of organically grown foods prevents or cures disease or provides other benefits to health have become widely publicized and form the basis for folklore. Almost daily the public is besieged by claims for "no-aging" diets, new vitamins, and other wonder foods. There are numerous unsubstantiated reports that natural vitamins are superior to synthetic ones, that fertilized eggs are nutritionally superior to unfertilized eggs, that untreated grains are better than fumigated grains, and the like. One thing that most organically grown food products seem to have in common is that they cost more than conventionally grown foods. But in many cases consumers are misled if they believe organic foods can maintain health and provide better nutritional quality than conventionally grown foods. So there is real cause for concern if consumers, particularly those with limited incomes, distrust the regular food supply and buy only expensive organic foods instead.
【題組】48. The author implies that there is cause for concern if consumers with limited incomes buy organic foods instead of conventionally grown foods because _______________.
(A) organic foods can be more expensive but are often no better than conventionally grown foods
(B) many organic foods are actually less nutritious than similar conventionally grown foods
(C) conventionally grown foods are more readily available than organic food
(D) too many farmers will stop using conventional methods to grow food crops
