四、閱讀測驗【請依照段落上下文意,選出最適當的答案】
The human body is a complex machine. From the day we are born, our bodies grow and change in response to our environment, diet, and habits. The body has many different organ systems and parts that work together to allow us to breathe, move, see, talk, and digest food all at the same time. Most of the time we are unaware of what is happening in our bodies; usually it is only when we get sick or feel pain that we notice.
Many people do not take care of their complex machines. Bad habits like smoking, drinking too much alcohol, and eating junk food damage our bodies. Stress can also cause health problems. People who worry a lot or have busy jobs often don’t get enough sleep or don’t eat properly. We can also damage our bodies when we play sports or get into accidents. Studies done by the Australian government show that most people get hurt because of an accidental slip or fall or because of injuries from car accidents. It’s true that a lot of people go to the hospital because of serious illnesses, but far more people end up there because they simply weren’t being careful.
Like machines, different body parts sometimes wear down from old age. People over the age of 65 are more likely to fall and hurt themselves, and these injuries—from bad cuts to broken bone—usually require serious medical attention. There are many treatments available to help older people recover from illness and injury. It is now common for older people with damaged joints, for example, to have surgery to replace the old joint with a new one made of plastic or metal. Instead of suffering aches and pains through their retirement days, older people are able to lead happier and more comfortable lives.
The best way to take care of your amazing machine is to eat the right foods, do regular exercise, and get enough sleep. Oh, and don’t forget to smile!

四、閱讀測驗
In the early days of his life, Eddie Chapman was a petty criminal that lived in England. He ran away from the army, stole, and even formed his own gang. His crimes landed him in jail, where he had little hope of continuing his criminal assets. He didn’t stay in jail, however. When the Germans invaded England in the summer of 1940, Chapman, then 25, wrote them a letter stating his intentions to join the Germans as a spy to avoid troubles with the law in England.
After some consideration, the Germans proceeded to break Chapman out of jail, trained him, and sent him on a mission to blow up a British airplane factory. But, it seemed that Chapman still had some love for his country. Upon parachuting from a plane en route to completing his mission, Chapman turned himself in to the local police, and managed to convince the British that he was still on their side.
To fool the Germans, the British faked damage to the plane factory, and taught Chapman what to say when he went back to the Germans to appear successful. And Chapman did manage to appear successful. The Germans loved the double-agent so much that they awarded him with a war award, gave him vast sums of money, and even gave him promotion.
The British, however, did not love Chapman quite as much. As Chapman was not secretive about his sources of income, the British saw him as a liability, and eventually dismissed the spy in 1944. Chapman then returned to his former life of crime, assuming that as he now held secrets to the British, he could probably bargain his way out of the arms of the law. The following years were spent avoiding punishment from the British law enforcement.
Chapman eventually settled down in 1953 after he managed to release his war stories. He got married, had a daughter, and quietly lived the rest of his life as a businessman until his heart gave out in 1997.

【題組】47. How did Chapman manage to capture the attention of the Germans in the beginning?
(A) He managed to contact the Germans from jail.
(B) He managed to steal money from the Germans.
(C) He fought the Germans when they invaded England.
(D) The Germans had already heard of his troubles with the law.

四、閱讀測驗【請依照段落上下文意,選出最適當的答案】
Earthquakes are the shaking and moving of the ground when energy is released in waves. These waves are called seismic waves. These waves are similar to ocean waves, which move through water. However, seismic waves move through the ground. Most earthquakes are caused by the movement of large sections of the Earth’s crust, called plates. The place where two plates meet is called a fault. Faults look like large cracks in the ground. If the two plates move in different directions, they build up energy at the fault line. When enough energy builds up, the stress on the fault becomes too great and it ruptures. This releases the energy and the ground starts to shake.
Earthquakes can also be caused by other natural events, such as landslides and volcanoes. The first movement of an earthquake, called the main shock, is often followed by smaller ground trembles, called aftershocks. These aftershocks signal that the plates are settling into their new positions. After the main shock, aftershocks can continue for days. According to some estimates, 500,000 earthquakes occur each year around the world. Most are very mild and are only recorded on scientific instruments. Only about 100,000 can be felt by humans. Among these, only about 19 cause major damage in a year.       Major earthquakes in populated areas can cause huge destruction. Buildings collapse, roads and bridges buckle and crack, and electrical and gas lines break and cause fires. If an earthquake happens in the ocean, it makes a series of huge ocean waves called a tsunami. A tsunami travels until it finally reaches land, where it causes large flooding. Scientists are searching for ways to predict earthquakes. They study the historical patterns of earthquakes and monitor the movement of the plates with seismic equipment. While they cannot predict an exact date of a future earthquake, they have a better understanding of when earthquakes are more likely to happen.

【題組】31. What is this passage about?
(A) What earthquakes are and what effects they can cause.
(B) The negative impacts of earthquakes.
(C) How to estimate the coming of an earthquake.
(D) How to prevent earthquakes.

四、閱讀測驗【請依照段落上下文意,選出最適當的答案】
I grew up on a farm in Colombia, a poor country in South America. The lack of rain has been killing many of the people who live around here. My friends and I have been helping them survive, but we’re not superheroes. We are just beans, little beans that grow in the dirt. Yet it’s our ability to grow in the dirt that makes us so special.
We’re called guajiro beans, and we don’t need much water. In fact, sometimes we can sprout from dry land. There are lots of nutrients in the soil that we can take in and grow from. When we’re fully developed in our pods, we contain vitamins, minerals, and proteins.
That is why we have been able to help so many people. As you know, Earth’s climate is changing. Here in Colombia, we’re feeling the effects. About ten years ago, the rain stopped coming. Our rivers have dried up, our forests have burned down, and our farms can’t grow many types of food. So, for many people here, we guajiro beans are giving them some of the nutrients they need. In addition to that, we’re also giving farmers a product to sell.
We’re especially important to the Wayuu people, a local tribe. The Wayuu have been farming the land here for centuries. However, they can’t grow and raise animals like they used to. But beans like my friends and me are keeping the tribe and its culture alive. In fact, we even help people grow other foods, too. We add nitrogen to the soil, which helps foods like pumpkins and corn grow. We can’t do all this by ourselves, though. We sometimes need a bit of water, and the farmers here have found ways to get small amounts out of wells, clean it, and spread it on our land.
I’m proud to be a guajiro bean.I’m strong, healthy, and easy to get along with. I’m so happy that I can help my Wayuu friends survive.

【題組】47. According to the article, why are guajiro beans special?
(A) They only grow in Colombia.
(B) They grow faster than other plants.
(C) They do not need much water to grow.
(D) They supply nitrogen as nutrition for people.

Scientists are thrilled about some tiny, furry finds. They have discovered two new species of lemurs on Madagascar, an island 41 off the southeast coast of Africa.

Madagascar    42   some of the world’s most exotic plants and animals. Lemurs live mainly in forest trees and are active at night.

Its name means “good man” in Malagasy, the official language of Madagascar. The animal was   44   scientist Steve Goodman, who has been studying the tiny creatures in Madagascar for 20years.
The other species is a giant mouse lemur with a bushy tail. Its name in Malagasy means “child.” The scientists chose that name to   45   Madagascar’s children to care for the many plants and animals in their country.
Finding a new lemur species is rare because many of the tiny creatures have become extinct. The recent find means that there are now 49 known species of lemurs in the wild.
