請依下文回答第 31 題至第 35 題 Nowadays, in public or private places, we tend to scroll mindlessly through our social media feeds when we have a few spare minutes (or for some, hours). And as we probably know intuitively, and as the research is confirming, it is not the best habit when it comes to our collective psychology. The American Academy of Pediatrics has warned about the potential for negative effects of social media in young kids and teens, including cyber-bullying and “Facebook depression.” But the same risks may be true for adults, across generations. A review study suggests “Facebook Addiction Disorder” because addiction criteria, such as neglect of personal life, mental preoccupation, escapism, mood modifying experiences, tolerance and concealing the addictive behavior, appear to be present in some people who use social networks excessively. A study also shows when people stop using the Internet, they also undergo small but measurable physiological effects. Rather than enhancing well-being, as frequent interactions with supportive offline social networks powerfully do, the current findings demonstrate that interacting with Facebook may predict the opposite result for young adults—it may undermine it. In fact, another study found that social media use is linked to greater feelings of social isolation, mentally and physically. Facebook is also a jealousy generator. We fall into the trap of comparing ourselves to others as we scroll through our feeds, and make judgments about how we measure up. One study looked at how we make comparisons to others posts, in “upward” or “downward” directions—that is, feeling that we are either worse or better off than our friends. It turned out that both types of comparisons made people feel worse, which is surprising, since in real life, only upward comparisons (feeling another person has it better than you) makes people feel bad. But in the social network world, it seems that any kind of comparison is linked to depressive symptoms. All of this is not to say that there is no benefit to social media—obviously it keeps us connected across great distances, and helps us find people we had lost touch with years ago. But getting on social networks when you have some time to kill, or, worse, need an emotional lift, is very likely a bad idea. If you are feeling brave, try taking a little break, and see how it goes. And if you are going to keep “using,” then at least try to use in moderation.

There are around 380 underwater cables in operation around the world, spanning a length of over 1.2 million kilometers (745,645 miles). In 2012, Hurricane Sandy slammed into the U.S. East Coast, knocking out several key exchanges where undersea cables linked North America and Europe. The entire network between North America and Europe was isolated for a number of hours. For us, the storm brought to light a potential challenge in the consolidation of transatlantic cables that all landed in New York and New Jersey. But most often when a cable goes down, nature is not to blame. There are about 200 such failures each year and the vast majority are caused by humans. “Two-thirds of cable failures are caused by accidental human activities, fishing nets and trawling and also ships’ anchors,” said an expert. “The next largest category is natural disaster, mother nature -- sometimes earthquakes but also underwater landslides.” A magnitude-7.0 earthquake off the southwest coast of Taiwan in 2006, along with aftershocks, cut eight submarine cables which caused internet outages and disruption in Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, Japan, Korea and the Philippines.

【題組】47. According to the passage, which of the following events have caused most of the cable failures?
(A)Earthquakes.
(B)Storms.
(C)Sea waves.
(D)Human activities.

Issues concerning women’s bodily integrity and autonomy, such as abortion, rape, and sterilization, are subject to strong opinions that give rise to equally charged political policies. As with other issues pertaining to women’s bodies, prostitution discourse is largely concerned with determining whether this social practice is exploitative, empowering, or a consequence of immorality.
Prostitution is here defined as a social practice by which men gain sexual access to the bodies of predominantly women, children, and sometimes other men, through the exchange of money, goods, or housing.Prostitution, as a social construct, arises from “men’s dominance and women’s subordination.”
Most people take one of three salient positions on prostitution. The first position argues that prostitution is a consequence of deficient moral character. This position draws heavily from patriarchal and religious traditions that equate female sexuality with temptation and male sexuality with dominance and sanctioned insatiability. The second position, the “sex work” position, asserts that prostitution is a valid form of labor and argues that prostitution is not inherently harmful to women. This position further contends that women have aright to decide what they will do with their bodies and that sex work, though oppressive for some, is potentially both lucrative and empowering for other women. The third position asserts that prostitution is a consequence of social, political, and economic inequality and argues that women are predominantly conscripted into prostitution because of their social vulnerability. Political regulation of prostitution activity varies according to each nation’s underlying economic and social justice commitments.

【題組】16 According to the passage above, which of the following is NOT a major concern of the practice of prostitution?
(A) Whether it is abusive.
(B) Whether it is tempting.
(C) Whether it is enpowering.
(D) Whether it is immoral.
