I know mathematics well, and I teach it well. I used to think that was all I needed to do. Now I teach children, not math. I accept the fact that I can only succeed partially with some of them. When I don’t have to know all the answers, I seem to have more answers than when I tried to be the expert. The youngster who really made me understand this was Eddie. I asked him one day why he thought he was doing so much better than last year. He gave meaning to my whole new orientation. “It’s because I like myself now when I’m with you,” he said.

當我開始明白一個年輕人需要的不僅僅是學校課程中所教授的東西，所以我感到很舒服。我很了解數學，我教的很好。我以前認為這是我需要做的。現在我教孩子，不是數學。我接受一個事實，我只能部分地部分地與其中一些成功。當我不知道所有的答案時，我似乎有更多的答案比我試圖成為專家。真正讓我明白的年輕人是艾迪。我問他有一天為什麼他以為他比去年好多了。他對我的整個新方向給了意義。 “這是因為我在和你在一起時，我喜歡自己，”他說。
