1946 年 Hal O. Anger進入加州大學柏克萊校區Donner實驗室當研究員。1950他設計了閃爍井形計數器(scintillation well counter)以取代蓋氏計數器做小標本內放射活性的測量。那個計數器起初用有機晶體，後來則用碘化鈉晶體作成井的形狀，以便容下小標本，並測其內之放射活性。由於計數效率高，這種儀器仍十分實用。
