There has been a great deal of change in the gallium arsenite (GaAs) semiconductor industry over the past several years. An awful lot of fabs are being built around the world, especially in Taiwan. GaAs is a compound semiconductor material that offers a number of advantages over silicon in high-speed and optoelectronic applications. While several major companies around the world started their research in GaAs 20 years ago or earlier, investors in Taiwan were neither interested nor confident in GaAs because of its relatively small market and immature technology.
