我們可以透過「結構樹狀圖」(structure tree)來對句子加以分析。每次樹狀圖的分支點為「詞組」(constituent)。

詞按照句法功能可以安排詞類，就是透過樹狀圖的終端成分來分類，其可以被同類的詞替換。相同的詞被分類在一起具有相同的句法功能，如名詞、動詞…等。可以互相替換，而不影響句子語法結構的詞組，即「句法範疇」(syntactic category)或「語法範疇」(grammatical category)。
