Canale and Swain 1980提出三個communicative competences(CC)，分別是grammatical, sociolinguistical, and strategical。到1983年，Canale修正加上第四個，discourse，指coherence and cohesion。

(B) orgnisational 是較近期針對CC的研究，由Bachman (1990)提出。他將Canale(1983)的模式分成兩類：organisational competency (包含grammatical & discourse) 和 pragmatic (包含sociolinguistical & illocutionary)兩類。
