This is your chance to describe your work experience, achievements, and career goals to your best advantage. You can decide what details about yourself to include, what to omit, and how to present your information clearly and persuasively. All the information you give must be geared toward winning the job you desire. You may choose between several standard ways of organizing the information you include in your résumé, depending on the strongest points of your training, experience, and skills. Two popular formats will be described here. First, the "chronological" format is organized according to time: the most recent experience is given first, and so on to the earliest. You may decide to use this format if you're preparing to graduate from high school or college, and have little or no work experience. This method spotlights your academic achievement, and downplays your lack of previous jobs. Those who have worked longer could also choose this format, but rather than listing their scholastic degrees in reverse chronological order, they would list their previous jobs. People who have not worked recently, or who have an uneven employment record, might select the "skills" format instead; in it, job applicants stress specific, job-related abilities, instead of the particular times when they have worked. Traditional résumés are typically one page long. Don't leave too much blank space on the page. That would give the appearance that you have little to say about yourself. To fill the gaps, carefully decide what other information—and how much of it—to include. Unless they are specifically relevant to the position sought, personal statistics (such as your birth date or eye color) are best skipped. Instead, consider filling excessive blank space with details about community service you may have done, academic or other honors, or additional skills—whatever helps you to "put your best foot forward" and sell yourself as the most qualified person to fill the job opening.
