  • 衍生詞素(Derivational morpheme)：可與其他語素結合成為一個新的字，如happiness中的後綴-ness，這樣的語素會帶來新的語義。
  • 屈折詞素(Inflectional morpheme)：與其他語素結合後，會改變其時態、單複數等等，如動詞遇到第三人稱單數時須加上後綴-s，這樣的語素只會改變文法，並不改變語意。
