Prevent, Prohibit, Forbid, Inhibit 防止、禁止、阻止「某人」做「某事」

prevent （防止、阻止、預防）

用法： prevent <someone> from <V-ing> something 

最常見的「防止、阻止、預防」，也有一些禁止的意味，但比較偏向「事先防止、行動預防」。 

prohibit（禁止）

用法： prevent <someone> from <V-ing> something 

這兩者「prevent vs prohibit」差別在於， 
prevent 是真的有「防範」「防止」的行為出來、有實際的防止行為， 
prohibit 則是比較偏向「定下規則，讓某人禁止做些什麼」，不確定「有、沒有動作」。 

中文翻譯其實很明顯：「Prevent 防止（偏向有動作） vs. Prohibit 禁止（偏向設下規定）」。 

keep（防止、禁止） 

用法：一樣是 keep <someone> from <V-ing> something 

Keep 用法和 prevent / prohibit 也一樣， 
但屬於比較中性、模糊的用法， 
同時有「防止、禁止」的意思存在，要看前後文。 

forbid （禁止）

用法：forbid <someone> to <V> something 

Forbid 意思接近 Prohibit，除了用法要使用 forbid SB to do something。 

inhibit（抑制、禁止、防止）

用法： Inhibit <someone> from <V-ing> something 

Inhibit 含有「禁止、防止、抑制」，比較偏向 keep 

Prohibit & Forbid 比較有「上對下、外部禁止」的概念； 
而 Inhibit 則 則較少「上對下」，比較中性。 

Prohibit / Forbid / Inhibit 這三者有結尾 -bit/-bid 有時很容易搞混， 
要多注意。 

ban（規則禁止、法令禁止）

用法：ban <someone> from <V-ing> something 

Ban 則是有「規則禁令、法令禁止」的意思 
比 Prohibit/Forbid 更加強調「法規、法令、正式規則」。 

有時候，ban 更強調，「已經被禁止，因為違法了法令」。 
e.g. banned 

stop （阻止、防止）

用法：stop <someone> from <V-ing> something 

Stop 用法比較中性，沒有上對下、沒有法規， 
也可用於「某人已經開始做某事」，阻止他的過程。 

整理： 
「防止」： prevent, inhibit, keep 
「禁止」： keep, prohibit, forbid, inhibit, ban 
「阻止」： stop, prevent, ban
