The heated debate over whether the government should allow semiconductor firms extend their business into mainland China continues to cause controversy as Vice Premier Lin Hsin-I revealed that the government may move the date for making a decision on the issue forward.

The major reason for 8-inch wafer fabs moving into the mainland is that Taiwan chipmakers' foreign customers have been prodding the OEM partners to go there. As part of their deployment of global strategies, international semiconductor giants like Intel and Motorola have all decided to make massive investments in the mainland. If the timetable for opening is delayed by one more year, it will only be detrimental to Taiwan.

Regarding national securities, James J. Heckman, winner of the 2000 Nobel Prize in economics, said Taiwan is seeing a politicized debate on the high-tech matter.
