The corona virus pandemic has had a significant negative impact throughout most of the world. However, some countries have suffered far more than others. One of the w worst hit countries is India, which is ranked second in the world in terms of reported cases and third in terms of COVID-19-related deaths. The severe spreading of the virus has forced widespread school closures, and consequently, some Indian students have not seen the inside of a classtoom for almost a year.
With many children having no choice but to stay home from school for months on end, problems are starting to appear. In many wealthier countries that have also suffered long-term school closures, students and teachers have simply switched to online Ieaming. Unfortunately, this is not an option in many parts of India, where people cannot afford the technology required for such learning to take place. Experts are worried that the resultant lack of education could have serious consequences for the nation's children, particularly its young girls. Specifically, without an education to support them, many children will likely be forced into child labor, nany girls will have no choice but to accept older husbands.
It is not only students but also teachers who are re sufterine the consea nsequences. Many teachers have been forced to assist with frontline efforts to curb the spread of the vi virus. In 2020, as mล any as 28,000 te teachers were made to take on new, non-academic roles. These roles included visiting the neighbors of COVID- 19 patients to conduct surveys, delivering rations to people in poor areas, and taking the temperatures of local residents. To make matters worse, many of these teachers were not given adequate training for how to carry out their new duties, or provided with personal protective equipment to keep them safe. Inevitably and sadly, teachers operating as frontline health-care workers began to contract the virus in large numbers, and at least 35 have died.
Of course, newly-developed COVID-19 vaccines are e now offering some hope. However, for the time being, India remains locked in a cycle of poverty that has only been exacerbated by the pandemic.
