A number of compounds are known to directly activate the GABAA  receptor.Of these compounds, muscimol and isoguvacine are the most well-known.Unlike GABA which does not cross the blood-brain barrier, these agents do enter the CNS and display GABA-mimetic activity following peripheral administration.
