Erythrocytes are broken down in spleen -> hemoglobin released -> broken down into heme

In macrophage: Heme ---heme oxygenase--->Biliverdin ---biliverdin reductase---> Bilirubin (unconjugated, insoluble due to intramolecular H-bonding)

Unconjugated Bilirubin bind to Albumin then is transported to liver, where it is conjugated by glucuronyltransferase before going into the bile and eventually small intestine.
