因 half of whom were given one aspirin a day and...  此句是屬於 In a medical study...的 關係子句

所以不可使用 half of them 不然此句就無法成為四大句型的任何一種（簡單句、並列句、複合句、並列複合句）

若要使用 half of them 的話 該句須加上 and 使前後句形成並列句  (後面句型要不要改就另請高明了@@)

可以明顯看到兩大子句沒有連接詞，所以藍色子句必須是adults的關係子句才合文法，也就是改成one half of whom

若是放在 meter（公尺）、kilogram（公斤）、hour（小時）等計算長度、重量、距離、時間等等的計量詞前，只能用 half

（這些小孩，他們來自貧苦的家庭，無法接受良好的教育，因此需要在很年輕的時候就開始工作。）

其中由關係代名詞 who 所引導的關係子句 who are from poor families 是用來修飾前面的先行詞 these kids。

one of / two of / some of / most of...等，來表示「他們其中之一 / 他們其中之二 / 他們中的一些 / 他們大部分...等」 

原先的關代 who 在前面遇到介係詞 of 後，who 必須改為受格的 whom，但是另一個關代 which 則不受影響。
