Cystic fibrosis is a disease state that affects exocrine glands.

In the lung, the result is the production of thick, tenacious sputum that predisposes patients to pulmonary infections.

Patients with cystic fibrosis have larger aminoglycoside volumes of distribution (0.35 L/kg) because body composition is altered.

Generally cystic fibrosis patients have decreased adipose tissue and increased extracellular fluid due to diseasestate–induced gastrointestinal malabsorption.

These patients also have higher aminoglycoside clearance values due to increased glomerular filtration rates.

Because clearance rates tend to increase more than volume of distribution values, the average aminoglycoside halflife is typically shorter in patients with cystic fibrosis (t1/2 = 1.5 hours).
