Extent of resection and surgical approach — Many standard lung resections, characterized in name by the amount of lung tissue removed (eg, wedge resection, segmentectomy, lobectomy, pneumonectomy), can be used to resect pulmonary metastases using an open thoracotomy incision (anterior thoracotomy, posterior thoracotomy) or minimally invasive techniques . However, in our view (and that of the STS), minimally invasive approaches are preferred; pneumonectomy should be discouraged as it is uncommonly curative in this setting.
