3. Reacting carboxylic acids with diazomethane, CH2N2, is a common method for the synthesis of methyl esters. The reaction occurs in two steps; (i) protonation of diazomethane by the carboxylic acid to yield CH3N2" and a carboxylate ion, and (ii) reaction of the carboxylate ion with CH3N2+.
