⑴Coral reefs are diverse underwater ecosystems held together by calcium carbonate structures secreted by corals. Coral aquaculture, also known as coral farming, is showing promise as a potentially effective tool for restoring coral reefs, which have been declining around the world.

⑵Marine protected areas (MPAs) have become increasingly prominent for reef management. MPAs promote responsible fishery management and habitat protection. Much like national parks and wildlife refuges, and to varying degrees, MPAs restrict potentially damaging activities.
