⑴ Los nacionalistas paranoicos se enfrentan a una paradoja fundamental. Por un lado, procuran que se integren las poblaciones dispares y que se forjen las culturas nacionales participativas; por otro lado, ellos están siempre invocando el pasado esplendor nacional, retornando hacia épocas distantes, en la tierra natal. De aquí el consabido "carácter de Jano" del nacionalismo, y la tendencia a descartar ese nativismo arcaizante como no más que una retórica del narodismo para recorrer el doloroso camino hacia un modernismo occidental más accesible a la masa de la población.
